EC-303: Random Processes Assignment-1

V Semester ECE
1. Prove the following from the axioms of probability (a) P (A B) = P (A) + P (B) P (A B) (b) P (A) P (B) if B A (c) P (n Ai ) = 1 P (n AC ) i=1 i=1 i 2. Find an expression for P (A B C) in terms of P (A), P (B) and P (C), using Venn diagram. 3. Use De Morgans law to show that [A(B C)]C = (AC B C )(AC C C ) 4. If A and B are subsets of the same set S, nd (a) (A B) (B A) (b) (A B) B C 5. Prove that a set having n elements has 2n subsets. 6. A factory has two assembly lines A and B that make 60% and 40% of the total production, respectively. A produces 3% defective items and B produces 5% defective items. Find the probability that a given defective part was produced by B. 7. A box has 10 diodes numbered 1 to 10. A diode is picked at random and a second diode is picked at random from the remaining 9 diodes. Find the probability that the numbers on the two selected diodes dier by two or more. 8. A box has 6 resistors of 10 and 4 resistors of 20. A randomly selected resistor is removed from the box. If another resistor is now removed from the box randomly, nd the probability that it is a 20 one. 9. In a ternary communication system, the symbols 0, 1 and 2 are transmitted with probabilities 0.5, 0.3 and 0.2 respectively. If any error event has a probability of 0.1, nd (a) the probability of receiving 0, 1 and 2. (b) the probability that a 0 was transmitted given that a 0 is received. Repeat the problem for equal transmission probabilities. 10. Let A and B be independent events. Prove that A and B C , AC and B, and AC and B C are also independent.
