Section 2 Case study 5: Sol 1: The real problem is that the management found it difficult to get the right

people to do physically tough jobs in the foundry. The problem got further aggravated when in recent times, 20 workers in the foundry left their jobs. The main cause for the problem was poor wage payment for foundry jobs, despite the fact that the workers had to put lot of physical effort and were subjected to poor working conditions. The workers in the foundry were paid low due to poor job evaluation system sdopted by the firm, which did not give much importance to working conditions and physical effort. the job evaluation is a systematic method of establishing relative worth of various jobs in the organisation. It is based on a systematic analysis of job factors such as skills, effort, responsibility, working conditions, etc. must be considered in the case of semi-skilled and unskilled jobs. In case of skilled jobs, education, experience, responsibilities, leadership qualities, innovativeness, etc., must be considered. Job evaluation must give proper weight-age to various factors depending upon the nature of jobs. Sol 2:The management can hendle the problem by reevaluating the foundry jobs by giving proper weightage to working conditions, and physical effort involved. S uch reevaluation would enable the workers to get higher wages, which they deserve. It will also improve the social status of the foundry jobs in the eyes of other workers working in the plant. The firm must also try to improve the working conditions in the foundry with special reference to cleanliness and humidity as it would reducethe strain and would also create an impact on the mind and health of the workers.
