OBSERVATION

Objectives : To know the respiration in animals, especially insect.

Instrument and Materials : 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Cricket or grasshopper Stopwatch/watch Pair of scales Respirometer Vaseline/wax Eosin Cotton Pinset Glass pipette

10. NaOH/KOH crystal

Work Method : 1. 2. Make a group of 3-5 students. Clean the respirometer carefully, put it in open condition. Measure the weight of cricket/grasshopper by means of the pair of scales. Write it in your workbook. 3. Further, pack KOH/NaOH crystal with cotton and put it in the respirometer by means of pincette carefully. 4. Thereafter, put an insect and close the respirometer by applying Vaseline/wax to the lid connection. This is aimed to avoid external air from entering the respirometer. 5. After the respirometer is perfectly closed, drop the end of scaled respirometer with eosin by means of glass pipette. Wise careful, avoid eosin to be absorbed outward from the scaled pipe. 6. 7. Look at the movement of eosin in the scaled pipe and record it in the table of observation. After the eosin is entering the respirometer tube, clean it immediately and take cotton fulfilled with NaOH/KOH. Let the insect breathes with free air for about 10 minutes. 8. Clean the respirometer then put the insect back to the same respirometer without KOH/NaOH. 9. Compare both treatment and make a conclusion of the experiment!

Fill in the table by calculate the distance of O2 in scaled pipe. Discussion of the Observation Result 1. What is the function of KOH/NaOH in the experiment? Answer : The function of KOH or NaOH in the experiment above is to bind H2O Compare both insect experiments above! Answer : After we compare, it turns out the rate of eosin by using NaOH faster than without NaOH Compare with group, is there a connection between the insect s weights with respiratory velocity? Answer : Yes, there. Make a conclusion of the experiment! Answer : The greater weight of the insect, the slower the rate of eosin. This also means that the slower pace of breathing.
