    The Chancellor of the University of Missouri has received an appeal from the Provost regarding charges of faculty irresponsibility against Professor Greg Engel that were previously dismissed. The Chancellor has accepted the Provost's appeal and is seeking written submissions from those involved on whether the case should be remanded to the Campus Committee on Faculty Irresponsibility for reconsideration using a "preponderance of the evidence" standard of proof rather than the original standard. Those involved have 10 days to provide their written suggestions on this issue.

    Subject: Charges of Faculty Irresponsibility against Greg Engel

    I am in receipt of the January 27, 2012 appeal filed by the Provost in this matter as well as the January 31. 2012 letter from George Smith, attorney for Professor Engel, urging that I affirm the decision of the Campus Committee on Faculty Irresponsibility. This is to inform you that, pursuant to Section 300.010.L.9 of the Collected Rules. I accept the appeal filed by Provost Foster and hereby afford you the opportunity to make written submissions or suggestions concerning the disposition of the appeal on review. For your information, and based on my review of this matter. I am especially interested in the question whether the case should be remanded to the Campus Committee on Faculty Irresponsibility for reconsideration under a "preponderance of the evidence"* standard of proof. I would appreciate receiving your written submissions or suggestions addressing this issue within the next 10 days.
