The History of Sandy

When Settlers Came

Brigham Young and the Pioneers settled in the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. This area was Spain s until 1821. Mexico won a war and their independence in 1821. This land was not a part of the U.S. until 1848 when the U.S. won the Mexican war.

What they did when they came

When they got there, the 143 settlers flooded the land with the city creek water and started to plant immediately. Pioneers still continued to come. By the fall of 1847, there were nearly 1,000 pioneers.

What they later discovered

In the 1870 s, They found Silver and other minerals from the Alta and Bingham Canyon. They sent them to the smelters to be processed. In 1900, Alta and Bingham processed their own minerals so the smelters shut down. There were 3 Smelters *The Saturn *The Flagstaff *The Mingo
