"How Wilhelm Dilthey Influenced Popular Science Writing" den

Totalitynote that Dilthey uses this word in the sense of a contextual whole rather than in the contemporary sense of a closed systemindicates the multiplicity of historical life (GS 7: 157), which consists of the plural yet intersecting structures and processes of the life-nexus (Lebenszusammenhang).

The Pruductive Force of History and Dilthey's Formulation of the Historical World'den Lived experience is the most direct way in which life manifests itself to us and it is also the most important resource for the human sciences. Lived experience provides us with our own individual Lebenszusammenhang (life-nexus) and represents our point of access to the Zweckzusammenhange (purposive Systems) of the human sciences. The tension between the specificity of a life-nexus and the universal purposes of a scientific System is best resolved, according to Dilthey, if we conceive the historical world in which they intersect as an intermediate kind of order : a Wirkungszusammenhang. It is difficult to translate Dilthey's term Wirkungszusammenhang. In my early work on Dilthey, I followed Hodges' decision to render it as "dynamic system". Others have chosen such terms as "effectuating coherence", "system of interaction", and more recently I have used "system of influences". Another way to conceive of a Wirkungszusammenhang is as a productive nexus and this is perhaps most consistent with Dilthey's increasing emphasis on the need to study history in terms of human objectifications. A Wirkungszusammenhang is a system that produces objects which express human values and purposes. In this essay, I will therefore speak of the Wirkungszusammenhang as a productive nexus or system.
