2nd Viewing Assignment Adrian Paris November 11th, 2010

I didnt want to just turn on the TV and watch a random show this week, because of the mixed effects from previous weeks, so instead I watched a show that interested me. I ended up watching a PBS independent lens documentary on DVD called Between the Folds, which aired on December 22, 2009. The show looked at origami around the world, a subject that recently has interested me. Here is the abstract: Origami may seem an unlikely medium for understanding and explaining the world. But around the globe, several fine artists and theoretical scientists are abandoning more conventional career paths to forge lives as modern-day paper folders. Through origami, these offbeat and provocative minds are reshaping ideas of creativity and revealing the relationship between art and science. BETWEEN THE FOLDS chronicles 10 of their stories. I really enjoyed this show, as it focused on Origami from different viewpoints, and I found it really showed the progression of art over the last century in an effective manner. It focused on origami experts from around the world, and really got great interviews with the artists. I thought it connected with the goals of PBS, because it recognised that not all viewers are interested in politics or financial propaganda. It showed the connections between the origami done artistically, competitively and the ones that focus on the practical applications of this technology. I dont see how they could have improved this documentary, really sets the standard for other documentaries.
