Solar Power

Shahen Fakhraldin

Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity

1-Photovoltaic (PV)

2-Concentrated Solar Power (CSP)

Problem Solar energy is not available at night , so making energy storage an important issue in order to provide continuous availability of energy

Energy Storage Methods : 1-Photovoltaic a-Rechargeable Batteries

b- Pumped-storage Hydroelectricity

Energy park in Geeshacht, Schleswig Holstein, Germany

2-Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) a-Molten salts system

b-Thermochemical energy storage system

Evaluation: -About 1% of the surface of the Sahara desert would be sufficient to supply the entire worldwide electricity demand from CSP plants

-PV systems have advantages for low-power demand, stand-alone systems and building-integrated systems -CSP systems are best for High-power demand -In 2010 CSP systems cost $5.00 - $6.55 per watt (AC). PV less than $3.50 per watt (DC). -By 2020, the CSP solutions are expected to be in the $2.40 - $3.80 per watt (AC), but by that time, PV plants could be below $2 per watt (DC).

Conclusions:

PV -Solar Energy CSP Electricity

-Solar Energy Storage methods are urgently need because the increased demand and unsteady state of solar energy Rechargeable Batteries -PV storage Pumped Storage Hydroelectricity Molten Salts System -CSP storage Thermochemical energy storage systems
