Network architecture of GSM

The diagram shows the GSM network architecture It consists of the terms like: Mobile Station Cell Design Base Station SubSubSystem (BSS)

Radio Interface Differences (1 of 2)

The radio interface in the wireless systems provides the link between the fixed infrastructure of different operators and the mobile station of various manufacturers. The radio interface serves two main functions: To transport user information, both speech and data bi-directional. To exchange signaling information between the mobile station and the network.

Radio Interface Differences (2 of 2)

Uplink and Downlink differences: differences: The radio link directed from the mobile station to the network is called the uplink. The radio link directed from network to the mobile station is called the downlink.

Call Processing In GSM

The following example describes a call from a fixed network subscriber

Diligences

2.

Short Text Messages (SMS): The capability to send short text messages from one phone to another. Roaming: The roaming feature allows a user to make and receive calls in any GSM network and to use the same userspecific services worldwide

Data Transfer Rate As Limitation

One limitation of GSM is that currently it has a maximum data transfer rate of only 9 kbps, but new developments like HSCSD (high speed circuit switched data) and GPRS (general packet switched radio) are pushing this up quite a bit.

Conclusion
In short, it can be concluded that GSM was proved to be the mother of all the mobile technologies Taking the data transfer rate into consideration, the technology has to some or other way increase the speed.
