The Disadvantages of Social Networking

The Disadvantages of Social Networking

Social networking sites can sell your personal information to anyone who wants to buy it. Even if the terms of understanding claim that no personal information will be sold, the site can change its policy at any time. If blogs or other original content is published at a site, the site can take over copyright privileges in unlimited ways. Few writers, artists and musicians are aware of this and forget to read the terms of understanding in order to find out what can happen to their works. Adults today are quite comfortable with website settings and preferences, children are not as familiar with privacy settings. Therefore, a profile which does not have adequate privacy settings can be easily accessed by any user who logs on to such sites.

In social networking sites there is no verification procedure for people who wish to join the site. Almost the entire Internet allows you to remain anonymous if you choose to. But because of this there is no assurance that the person may actually be who he claims to be online. Most social networking sites put all user-submitted information on public view by default. This is to promote normal interaction. But this also means that people with malicious intentions can also access the profile. This is harmful as they have direct access to contact information and photographs as well.

Money Flow
Venture Capital- most (if not all) social networks start with funding
from venture capitalists. Investors are willing to take a risk on a company if they think it can be profitable in the future, so they invest early and hope for a huge payoff down the road. For instance Twitter and Facebook have each raised several million dollars in venture capital. The goal is to either monetize the company or sell it to a large corporation for an even bigger profit. Monetizing can prove difficult, which leads me to my next revenue stream.

Advertising and e-Commerce-The most common way for

websites to generate revenue is to allow companies to advertise on the site. Web advertising is still an emerging market. Because of the millions of users on a social networking site, advertisers might be willing to pay more for an ad on a social network.

Offering Premium Options- While some social networks are

completely free, others might offer a premium option to its users in an attempt to earn some money. LinkedIn, for example, has a premium package for job seekers. All of your networking options are free with LinkedIn, but if you want special privileges you have to sign up for one of their premium options.

Creative Products and Promotions- Because of the difficulty of

monetizing a social network, websites are forced to come up with creative ways to earn revenue. The best example of this is Facebook Gifts. Facebook Gifts allows users to send virtual (as in not real) gifts to their friends that appear on the recipient s profile. The cost of a gift is $1.00 and we can add a personalized message to it.
