STARSHIP TROOPERS
In the future, humans have become part of a spacefaring federation with another distant planet around the earth and have encountered a hostile species of a large insects, the arachnids or what we usually called it as bugs in the clasification. Their home world is located in a planet not far from where the earth stood still, known as Klendathu. Klendathu itself, was actually contended with humans for possesion of other planets, not only as a part of survival project, but also in order to study the brain bug for the importance of Military Intelligence in securing the earth in case of a possibility of an outer space invasion occuring on earth. But there is still one thing which could not be separated with the human life: citizenship is not a birth right. In fact, in the federation, citizenship is not more than a privilege to those who were placed in a better society, or else, agree to go risking themselves by joining the military services in the country. Citizens are granted many opportunities that are limited for non-citizen by the government. Thousands of hopes keep coming from the whole world: a change in the human civilization and soon be victorious against the threatening life on the outer space that has been haunting them for more than decades. : Oh my god, what s happening, no, this couldn t be real, I meant it for sure (sounds of destructions, quick paces, desperate human beings all around him) Blast! Please, help me. Wait, people, you must listen to me. Don t go to that direction. Please, it s not safe enough for your children! When he suddenly woke up, he soon realized that he had been dreaming the whole time. He felt relieved to be woken up from that tremendous made it difficult for him to walking down the stairs to answer a phone call. Thank God, I ve been in a dream. What a dreadful night it was, imagining those nasty creature lingering around in the town. Worst of all, I couldn t even think about it before. Maybe I was just a little bit too tired last night. he said to himself with a comforting voice. But he realized that it was quite weird and since then, he often had a hunch about joining the military to help prevent the world from becoming in such destructible and fragile conditions just like what he has imagined before in his previous dreams. The phone call turned out to be Carmen, Rico s girl friend. Carmen: Guess who s on the line! (happily) Rico : Ah, Carmen, there you are. I ve been looking for you since like thousands of years Carmen: Don t be silly, I just phoned you last night. Anyway, are you still going to have lunch Cause I have this appointment with my dentist at 1 sharp. Rico : We ll meet earlier, then. How s that? Perhaps, at 10? So that we can have a chat first or maybe you decide to go somewhere else? Carmen: Humm, let me see my schedule. I guess that d be fine. Carmen: Nah, I should be going then. Thanks for the chat, Ric. Bye. . Three months later. In his office, Career Sergeant, Zim s currently leading a group of people for the recruitment this is a brutal but effective training that had been held ever since the company began. He had been Rico s boss for almost 2 years since he first assigned himself to the mobile infantry. Well, mostly people would refused to talk about him, knowing that his temperament was almost unable to be controlled by himself, especially when he started bursting out imperative words to his man. On one bright day, Rico was curious of an incoming call from his boss, which was no other man that Zim. He was still on his words with those men, but quickly changed his views when Rico came in to his office. I want no more of late deliveries. Do you understand that? said Zim, reminding his men. It was due to the bad weather and an accident happened in the last minute of the delivery. was the answer from them in reply. Zim : Rico, how s your day? Busy coping with your man, aren t you? In his appartment, he received some recent messages informing him that he should summon his man in order to be prepared for a possibility of an asteroid launched by the Arachnids, which turned out to be happened for real. A few days later an asteroid obliterated the city of Buenos Aires, he was shocked in hear the news. Destruction was all that was left of the town, police cars, ambulance, children and their parents screaming while running to save themselves. This incident killed millions of people, including Rico s beloved family. Despite being all alone with his job, Rico intended to rescind his resignation but still remains with the infantry as an invasion force. A few weeks later after the promotion. Herald : Ric. I m happy for you. Promotion, means party. Rico : Wow, wait a second, come on you know how my life works. I should be going Herald : Hey, don t go. I just got a message from your boss, he asked you to prepare your man. Well, you know, in case there is a possibility of.. you know what I mean, those bugs-like aliens? Rico : Yeah, sure I ll do it. Story Telling Competition Sonic Linguistic 2012 Then he put down the telephone and started looking for his men. On his way to his office, he was paralyzed in front of his television. News on every channel was talking about one thing: an alien sudden invasion that has caused a major destruction in the city. Quickly he summoned his team to help people in the town, but at the end his best man was found dead. This was the main cause of him rescindin his resignation and remaining with the mobile infantry. Days and weeks passed. On one rainy afternoon, Rico s walking around the city park just a few blocks from where he lived, in his appartment. He suddenly saw a figure and was his old best friend, Carl Jenkins. Luckily, Rico soon found out that the company in which Carl was hired to, was about to do some kind of collaboration with Rico s company. So off they went for a chat, until the 2 of them were convinced that they would need to keep in contact with each other, and a single promise to ensure that the project that they ve been looking forward all this time was soon gonna become a compromising reality to the human civilization. One morning, Rico was listening to his iPod while he jogged around the city park when suddenly. Rico : I m sorry, but.. Carl : Oh my, Rico! Is that you? Rico : Carl, you re not changing at all! It s been a definitely long time since our graduation in high school Carl : I bet you re still with Carmen? Anyway, why don t we sit for a while and probably have a chat Rico : Yeah, I m currently working on this project. Some kind of expedition about, you know, that incident which happened a couple of days ago. Those alien things? Carl : I got that. Anyway, my company is also working on a mission to.. you know, study their (bugs-like aliens) brain. I heard that they re going to send some of your man to the expedition mission. Rico : Wow, wait. Are you working for the Wrights and Co.? Carl : Uh huh. Why? Rico : Then, it s my man you re going to work with, and of course, with me. After he had an appointment with Carl, he went back to his appartment and started working in front of his laptop. He began making plans to work on and started collaborating with his people. A few weeks later, he received information from his ex-girlfriend that she might also join his expedition, while she also described about their relationship, which was no other than an intimate friend. A couple of months since his last appoinment with Carmen, suddenly there was an alarm sound at Rico s office. There were senses of panic and desperate steps all over the building. Rico was taken aback with the fact that his team had discovered a deserted out post that had been over run by Bugs. Moreover, it was identified that a distress call was meant to be a trap for human. One of his best men was also killed at the same time in that incident. Then, Rico recalled about his meeting with Carl, that Carl was now a high-ranking intelligence officer in his company. Carl, it started again, those Bugs. I m sure that they actually had this desire to learn about us as well. Can you manage to have a chat or two with me, tonight maybe? he asked his friend. All he could hear was a yes answer, and then a simple beep from the telephone line. On one windy night, Carl sent an email to ask Rico for an online chat. Inside the chat box. Carl : Rico, I know you re no longer their boss. You realized about that, don t you? Rico : (silent for a while, and then answer) Because you already know that, then I should tell you that it was all started from that incident when the bugs attacked our people. And, unfortunately, one of my best man died. I must take the responsibility by resigning and I thought it d be the best way. Carl : But at least, you ve fixed it up right? I mean, Zim is currently taking control of them, right? Rico : Yeah, but still.. I ve got to pay something in return for disappointing them.

Since, you know what to do with your men, I guess it would be best if you ll help me in leading one of my team in which I m about to bring with in the expedition. Rico : Are you pretty sure about that? Carl : Don t deny that you really need a team to help you, Ric. Carl field-promoted Rico as a lieutenat and started conducting their mission: capture the brain bug. The fleet encountered fire from the Bugs, causing Carmen s ship to be destroyed and injured her. So off they (Carl and Rico) went to a place: the Bug tunnel system near Rico s current location. They found Carmen wounded in a cavern, and at the mercy of several Arachnids, including the brain bug. This moment allowed Rico to start saving her life. 2 weeks later, at the time when a bomb incident occured to Carmen s spaceship. Carmen: Ricooo, help me! Rico : Carmen, where are you? Wait, ok, don t worry. We re coming. Carmen: You ve got to hurry.. they re taking me away.. Oh My God, Carl, Ricooo! And then Carmen vanished in a blink of an eye. The bug troopers had taken her away through their tunnel system and put her inside a cavern not far from Rico s location. At the mercy of the Bugs, Rico and Carl were allowed to enter the door of the cavern and soon found Carmen s body laying on the ground. Rico : Bloody, Carmen! You look very pale. Come one, let me help you. Carmen: No, Rico, watch out behind you! (The aliens suddenly attacked Carl drained out Carls brain) The cunning brain bug suddenly drains the content of Carl s cranial cavity with a proboscis, but before it can do so to Carmen, she severed it with a knife. Rico quickly threatened the Bugs with a small nuclear bomb so the brain bug reluctantly allowed him to withdraw with Carmen. The Arachnids continued their attacks upon Carl. This made him mortally wounded. So he decided to sacrifice himself, by detonating the nuke saving Carmen and Rico. When finally Carmen and Rico succeed to escape from the tunnel, they met Zim. Rico curiously asked him about his man, and the conversation ended with Zim, informed him that they ve already got the the brain bug, ready to be studied by the scientist in the earth. So they went back safely to the earth, bringing the great news to the endangered world they used to face. Carl : Both of you, now, go! Just leave me alone here! Hurry up! Carmen: No, Carl, you ve got to go with us (helping by struggling in a fight with the bug) Carl : I m staying. Don t you waste your time. Run! Save yourself. Carmen: Rico, make him understand. Please. Rico : Carl, I m so sorry. I don t know how to thank you. Carl : Just, go. For the sake of your life, Ric. This is what I ve been longing for. Just go! (Carl sacrificed himself by distracting the brain bug. But then, Rico and Carmen could no longer hear his voice again, but a single scream running through their ears. It was Carls .) Zim : Rico, Carmen, we ve got to hurry. Let s get in to the spaceship. Come on. Zim and his troopers had successfully kept the brain bug and all of them went safely back to the earth, ready to inform the world about their most celebrated invention of all time.
