The P 51D mustang was a late variation of the mustang which came into production during mid1944 and

it quickly became the USAAFs primary fighter because of fast production and quick mobility in the air. Even though the USAAF took a liking to this variant after the second world war over half the operational variants were P 51B or C models which started production around the beginning of the 2nd world war but were no way near as fast in production as the Ds. During 1945-48 the P 51Ds were built under licence in Australia by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation for a good defence aircraft since the hurried design of the CAC Boomerang which was found to be slow and unreliable and the P 51D mustang seemed a perfect alternative.
