Site Description

Winder Barrow Middle School is situated in the downtown area of Winder, Georgia also known as Barrow County. Winder Barrow Middle School is a Title I school located halfway between Gainesville, Georgia and Athens, Georgia in the Northeast Georgia area. The school is over fifty years old. Originally, the school was built before integration to house the AfricanAmerican Comprehensive population. It was both the middle and the high school all in one. As years have passed, it is now known as one of the three middle schools located in Barrow County. The population of Barrow County is 69,367 people; 11.4% of which is African American, 74.6% Caucasian, 3.4% Asian, 8.7% Hispanic, and 0.3% American Indian. 12.6% of citizens live below the poverty level and 78.9% possess a high school diploma compared to state of 83.5%. Of the 78.9% of high school graduates, only 14.9% of citizens have obtained a Bachelors degree. Part 1: Description of the Site/Environmental Scan A. School Level Data Currently, Winder Barrow Middle School houses a total of 744 students. Sixth grade has a total of 239 students, seventh grade with 251, and eighth grade with 254. The schools population consists of 18.38% African American students, 64.41% Caucasian students, 13.38% Hispanic, 3.38% Asian, and 0.44% Indian. There are two administrators, one school counselor, one instructional coach, forty-

nine teachers, and twenty-five staff members. The average age of our library collection is 1996. According to our records as well as that of TitleWave, we currently have a total of 10,355 books which averages approximately 14 books per student.

B. Specifics Related to the Topic Learner Analysis I focused on three specific sixth grade Social Studies standards for this collection development plan. Currently, there are nine sixth grade Social Studies classes. All sixth grade Social Studies classes are taught by three teachers (Hansard, Moller, and Jones). These teachers participated in a survey that led to the standards chosen for this collection development plan. Teacher Segment Number of Students

Lexile scores for the above mentioned students were retrieved from the CRCT Lexile Reading Scores in Spring 2011 (5th grade year). Results indicated approximately 26% of these students are reading above grade level (CRCT score of 851 and plus) while approximately 66% of the students are at or on grade level. However, I found that, of the 66% reading at or on grade level, a significant portion of the students fall in the lower of the grade level range (CRCT score of 800815). Results also indicated that we have about 8% of these students who are below their reading level. Special needs students are provided accommodations which include extended time for assignment completion, guided notes, information presented visually, information broken into smaller parts, having their tests read, pre-tests, differentiated assignments, differentiated teaching methods, and extension activities. Students with special needs are also grouped into small group instruction with a mixture of other students (gifted, no accommodations needed, and other special needs students). When possible, students are provided with choice of assignments and presentation methods.

Approximately 59% of these students are Caucasian, 30% African American, 10% Hispanic, and 1% other. There are almost an equal number of girls versus boys in each class. Only one class reported a significant difference with 57% being boys and 43% being girls.

C. Other local resources No other local resources accessible.

Part 2: Curriculum Review/Mapping The following Georgia Performance Standards will be focused upon by the classroom instructors: SS6E3 The student will describe factors that influence economic growth and examine their presence or absences in Latin America and Canada. SS6E7 a. Explain the relationship between investment in human capital (education and training) and gross domestic product (GDP) b. Explain relationship between investment in capital (factories,

The student will describe factors that influence economic growth and examine their presence or absence in Europe. SS6E10 The student will describe factors that influence economic growth and examine their presence or absence in Australia.

machinery, and technology) and gross domestic product (GDP) c. Describe the role of natural resources in a countrys economy. d. Describe the role of entrepreneurship

In order to meet standards SS6E3, SS6E7, and SS6E10, students must understand the basics of economics and how investment in education and training, factories, machinery, and technology affects Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Students also need to understand the importance of a countrys natural resources and entrepreneurship on economic growth. Teachers focus on making sure the students understand the basics of economics by providing a lesson on economic basics. In addition to completed activities from students textbook and workbook, students are also expected to work in groups to produce an invention and choose a famous entrepreneur in history to research and present findings.

Activities/Projects

Accessible Resources

SS6E3; SS6E7; SSE610: Describes factors that influence economic growth and examines their presence or absences in Latin America and Canada, Europe, and Australia a. Students choose from selected topics about Latin America, Canada, Europe, and Australia to research and present findings b. Students participate in lesson on basics of economics c. Students choose famous inventor/entrepreneur to research and present findings d. Group invention project e. Course text assignments

PowerPoint to introduce topic. Thinking Maps/Tree Maps for brainstorming. Course text Presentation software (PowerPoint, Inspiration, etc.) for student generated presentations on specific topics/people. Internet access to websites after website evaluation lesson.

Part 3: Collection Evaluation Method 1: Teacher Survey I began by sending out a teacher survey to all three Social Studies instructors asking them what additional resources they thought was needed. These instructors have taught Social Studies an average of four years and are very familiar with the resources currently on hand. I used the very simple and user-friendly Google Docs to determine what teachers felt they needed in order to meet the above mentioned sixth grade Social Studies standards. From the teacher survey, I determined on which standards to begin. While history closely followed for each standard, it was clear the

instructors felt the need for new and updated resources for the economic understandings for each of the standards (Latin America, Canada, Europe, and Australia).

Method 2: TitleWave Search Next, I downloaded our MARC records to TitleWave in an effort to receive feedback on our current collection and determine what we already had on hand as well as what TitleWave recommended for each of these areas. This evaluation allowed me to look at the collection in several different ways. For instance, if we already housed a particular book, TitleWave suggested additional books that were similar to that particular resource. Since I am searching for economics material, I wanted to be sure that we have the most up-to-date information possible for our students. I found our collection was lacking sufficient as well as updated resources to meet the needs of our students. It was very clear from the results that additional material related specifically to economics were needed. Method 3: Catalog Search Next, I accessed our school librarys catalog (OPAC) using several different search terms. While I did find an insignificant number of resources located in the 500 and 600s, I found that most of our resources for these standards were located in the Social Sciences (300s), Geography and History (900s), and reference categories. While I was able to locate numerous available resources, I found they were in need of updating. I searched using the terms

Canada, Europe, Australia, and Latin America. I found 61 books relating to Canada, 58 books relating to Europe, 35 books relating to Australia, and only 20 books relating to Latin America. While these numbers were more than a few, I found that the average age of our collection in the Social Sciences (300s) was 1992, Geography and History (900s) was 2001, and reference collection was 1988. Again, another clear indication for the need to update what we already house. To get more specific in finding resources on hand for the particular standards chosen, I also searched OPAC for terms such as Canada and economics, Latin America and economics, etc. This search led to even fewer resources directly related to economics. I found Canada to have 5 books, Europe to have 11 books, Australia to have 9 books, and Latin America to have 3 books. During my OPAC search, I also found that we currently house very few Hispanic resources. Method 4: Lexile Scores Lastly, I decided to take a look at this group of students lexile scores. My purpose for this was to get an average score for this group to guide my selection of material. The instructors definitely felt we needed higher level materials added to our collection to meet the needs of our gifted students. While there is definitely a need for higher lexile score material, I also wanted this score to guide my decision through the entire process. I found that the average lexile score for this group was 852. First, I compiled a list of materials on the topics taking special note of the available lexile scores. Next, I narrowed my order down by referring back to the lexile scores for this

10

group of students in an effort to determine appropriate materials, while at the same time considering several selections higher than this score.

Part 4: Materials Order/Budget Summary After identifying the strengths and weaknesses of our library collection in relation to the targeted standards and objectives, I used five different vendors to locate resources to meet the needs of the learners. I have highlighted multicultural resources and those targeted for our special needs students. I obtained reviews for the resources from several locations to include the School Library Journal, amazon.com, GALILEO, and Novelist. The items chosen meet the needs of a range of learners to include our multicultural population, students reading below grade level, on or at grade level, and above grade level. I have also included audio/visual resources to meet the special needs of students and to meet the needs of those students who learn best through audio and visual learning.
