Hydraulic System Design

Principles of Engineering Jake Gilbert 4th Block

Introduction: Design a hydraulic system that will raise an 8,000 lb. load 30 in. The cylinder must have a 30 in. stroke. The systems maximum operating pressure is 1,000 psi. The design will work at 80% of its max pressure. The cylinder must move 10 in. in one second. Design process: In order to design this system, we needed to find the flow rate, the reservoir size, the cylinder size, and the required horsepower of the engine.
1) Flow:

(10in/sec)(1gal/231in3)= (0.043gal/sec)(10in2)= (0.43gal/sec)(60)= 25.8 gpm

2) Reservoir

Size

(25.8)*3= 77.4 in3

3) Cylinder

Size

A=10 10=r2 10/=r2 r=1.78 in D= 3.56 in2 4 in2 4) Horsepower Hp= (25.8*1000)/1714= 15.05 hp

Schematic: Once all of the variables had been figured out, the schematic could then be drawn up.
