Much Ado About Nothing

Objective: Understanding the importance of camera shots and angles in constructing characters.

Camera

Each shot is carefully chosen to demonstrate a character s importance/the surroundings and even the atmosphere which is created. Each picture provides us with a snapshot of reality- we need to consider the use realityand more importantly, the effect each shot has on us.

Medium shot

Birds eye view

Long shot

Wide shot/Establishing shot

Over the shoulder shot

Close up

Extreme close up

The effect

As the essay question focuses on BeatriceBeatricewe need to look closely at how the camera is used to show the character at all times. For example: When the camera zooms in on Beatrice s eyes, what might this connote or suggest to us?

Words and pictures

There is only one thing more effective than visual suggestion and that is the presence of dialogue. When we watch the clip of Act 4 Scene 1 we need to focus not only on the camera and media elements but also the choice of language from Shakespeare.

Look at the extract in your copies of the Play and work through the speeches involving Beatrice. For each section of the text you will need to summarise what she is saying (use your glossary) and the language devices used by Shakespeare.
