Study of Photon Statistics of Optical Sources and Amplifiers

By Ravi Shankar (2010JOP2722) Under the Supervision of Prof. M.R. Shenoy and Prof. K. Thyagarajan Department of Physics

Objective and Motivation

Objectives of the Project: Design and development of experimental setup to study the photon statistics of optical sources. Analysis of photon statistics of each optical sources at different average no of photons. To study the photon statistics of amplified signals coming from single and cascaded EDFA. Motivation : For realization of quantum computers, quantum cryptography and high resolution spectroscopy the knowledge of photon statistics is necessary. To study the applications of photon statistics of EDFA in estimating power budget and BER optimisation of fiber optic links.

Work Done and Future Plan

Work Done in the current semester: Study of the effect of attenuation on photon statistics. Photon Statistics does not change with the introduction of attenuator. Study of Arrayed Waveguide Grating (AWG) as an optical filter.

Future Plan: To measure the photon statistics of single and cascaded EDFA.
