This is a fantastic book that could be used in middle
school grades. It is full of historic information and
opportunities to enhance literacy. Here are some
engaging activities:
--TIMELINE: Students can make a timeline about the
major events in the story to help them develop their
ability to summarize and sequence events.
--ROLE PLAY: In groups, students can select a scene and
act it out. After practicing they can present it in front of
the class. The skits should be presented in order of
occurrence.
--GRAND DISCUSSION: Students can have a grand
discussion about the book. Some questions to consider
are:
--What were your reactions to the book? Can you
connect the text to other text or to a personal
experience? What was the most shocking or interesting
fact that learned? What were some of the feelings that
you experienced as you read the book? Can you make a
connection between this historic event and a current
event?
Summary:
This book describes Jacks
experiences in the
Concentration Camps around
Europe during the Holocaust.
As an adolescent when the
Nazis invade his country of
Poland, Jack grows into a young
adult while determined to
survive the atrocities of his
imprisonments. During this
time, Jack manages to create
friendships and help others.
After the end of the War and
the Holocaust, Jack discovers
that most of his family did not
survive. However, Jack decides
to build a new life for himself in
the United States, where starts a
family and becomes
economically successful.
