A (very) Brief History of Protest and Activism


1910 : mexican revolution 1968 : student protests - against the PRI government 30-800 protestors were shot in the Tlatelolco Massacre. 1985 : massive earthquake, corrupt government incapable of assisting its citizens. grassroots and communities self organize 2008-2011 : protests against the problematic war on drugs policy, resulting in over 50,000 deaths 2011 : occupy mexico

Urban Activism
December 2011 : Wikilane a group of activists organized online through facebook and fondeadora, raising a $1000 to paint a 5 km bike lane across the city. in protest of the governments motored vehicle policies. gov was committed to designating 300 km of bike lanes until 2012. there are only 6.8 km. private vehicles take up 30% of traffic and 80% of the budget. since the cycle-share project began in 2010, the number of cycling commuters has doubled.

740 prtotests in three months of 2010 an average of 9.5 protests a day in 2009 there is no municipal or government regulation over demonstrations causing hundreds of hours of blocked traffic. the electricity workers 860 protests caused 490 hours of congestion.
