English 9CP Research Assignment: Genocide

After Eli Wiesel wrote his memoir, Night detailing the horrific events he survived during the holocaust, he dedicated the rest of his life to ensuring that people would never forget the awful events he lived through and that those events would never be repeated. Fortunately, history has not repeated the horrific events to the scale mankind witnessed during the holocaust; unfortunately, we did not learn from the holocaust and genocide remains a problem around the world. Your assignment is to research one of many instances of genocide throughout recent history (dating from the early 1900s) and write a short essay (2-3 pgs.) explaining the events in your own words. Since you will study the holocaust in Freshman Seminar in great detail, that topic is off limits. However, there are many events in history that you may choose from, for example: Armenian Genocide, Darfur, Rwanda, Bosnia, Cambodia, USSR under Joseph Stalin, among many others. Please make sure your essay contains the following: Essay is typed, double-spaced, 12 point font and 2-3 pgs. with one-inch margins all around Your essay should address the following questions: -

How does genocide start? What is the reason for the conflict between the persecuted group and the persecutors? What is the reasoning or justification used by the persecutors for genocide? What is being done to stop this and future genocide? What are some ways you or the public can help?
