FOOD CHAIN AND FOOD WEB

PRESENTED BY: RASHMI MT/BT/1004/2010

FOODCHAIN
INTRODUCTION
A food

chain shows which animals eat other animals or

plants.
A

food chain starts with what gets eaten and the chains only go in one direction.

arrows point towards what does the eating.

Food

Food chain end with a top predator.

FOOD WEB

Most organisms eat more the JUST one organism. When more organism are involved it is know as a FOOD WEB. Food webs are more complex and involve lots of organisms.

PYRAMID OF NUMBERS

ENERGY PYRAMID

It represents the trophic levels by which the incoming solar energy is transferred at each steps of the food chain.

To sustain an ecosystem there must be more energy at low tropic levels.

This not only allows the organisms to maintain a stable population but to transfers the energy as well.

PYRAMID OF PRODUCTIVITY

FOOD WEB MODELS

Introduction
Disappearance

of large body top predators and upper

trophic levels of food webs.

Role

of trophic interactions.

Patterns of Food web structure in small versus large habitat fragments and observations of collapsing island communities

CLASSES OF COMMUNITY MODELS

There are mainly two broad classes of community models that predict responses of populations to habitat change.

A) single factor models and B) Food web models

There above classification multitrophic assemblages.

SINGLE FACTOR MODEL

It emphasis the unique responses of individual species to variation in habitat area. This frame work includes many models and single species analysis. It also includes keystone species effects and habitat alterations by foundation species. This model also helps in thee assessments of extinction risks.

FOOD WEB MODELS

AQUATIC FOOD WEB OF SARRACENIA

The macroinvertebrate community associated with Pitcher Plant Sarracenia purpurea is a model system for testing mechanisms controlling abundance in the face of habitat change. S. pupurea is a perennial plant that grows in peatbogs and seepage swamps.
