Assignment No 1. Note : Make a group of 5 to 6 students.

Topic: Linear Programming A) Maximizing profit per sq ft (square foot) for a retail outlet. Choose a retail outlet of your interest (Organised retail players will be the best option) Understand the space allocation for different categories of products (staples, FMCG, fruits and vegetables, plastics, other utilities, basic garments...etc..) Understand the margin structure of each category Understand the spatial (space) as well as other constraints under which the shop is operating Understand the sale patterns of each category and stock requirements Understand the refilling patterns of different categories Formulate a Linear Programming Model to maximize profit per square foot Solve it using solver Make a space allocation plan for that shop based on your calculations and make recommendations to the shop owner/company Document all your hurdles and how you overcame them Make a comprehensive report about the whole chain of events and report as Assignment 1

Or B) 1. Find out from transporters about standard size of containers used for transporting goods by road. 2. Find out package size and weight of 3 to 4 consumer durable goods of any one company (Phillips, Samsung, Sony etc.) 3. Find profit margins for each item. 4. Formulate a Linear Programming Model to maximize profit 5. Solve it using solver 6. Document all your hurdles and how you overcame them 7. Make a comprehensive report about the whole chain of events and report as Assignment 1 Or C) An ice-cream parlour sells ice creams of various flavours in different sizes (small cups, large cups, family packs etc.) These ice-creams are procured in packages of different sizes and each package would have a number of icecreams. The packages are stored in deep freezers at the outlet. Visit an ice-cream parlour and formulate the linear programming model to maximize the profit. Solve the problem using Excel- solver. Make a comprehensive report about the whole chain of events and report as Assignment 1

Note: 1) List the assumptions made. 2) Keep in mind the constraints like storage capacity, demandetc.) Important Instruction While the data collection is being carried out as a group, each student is to carry out the analysis independently and submissions are also to be individually.

Assignment No.2 Note : Make a group of 5 to 6 students. Topic: Queuing Theory 1. Select any place where queues are formed for getting service. (For e.g. Banks, hotels, billing counters in the malls etc.) 2. Visit the place. Study the elements of the queuing system. 3. Prepare data sheet giving the operating characteristics of queuing system for the data collected during peak hours over few days. 4. Find one of the suitable models that approximately represents the system and calculate the operating characteristics. 5. Compare the results obtained using the formulae with actual results obtained from the data sheet. 6. Carry out simulation based on available data. 7. Arrive at conclusions, recommendations and suggestions. 8. Carry out the analysis and submit in the form of report. Important Instruction 9. While the data collection is being carried out as a group, each student is to carry out the analysis independently and submissions are also to be individually.

Assignment No. 3 Forecasting From any source collect monthly or quarterly data of any company on Sales/ Profit/Expenditure etc for continuous period of four years (preferably latest available data) 1. Using moving average find trend-Cycle component. Establish regression line. 2. Decompose data using multiplicative decomposition method. 3. Forecast for next four periods.

4. Use data with exponential smoothing method to forecast next period. 5. Comment on quality of your forecast model. 6. Plot the data on time line. Also plot seasonal components and residue. Further plot the regeneration line. Comment on the plots. 7. Do you suggest any other method for forecast on your data?
