Cosmetics and skin care products are part of most peoples daily habits. The average women use - at least seven different products daily. The majority of people experience few problems, early or late time of application. Two types of reactions occur. Irritant contact dermatitis. dermatitis. Allergic contact dermatitis.

Introduction Irritant contact dermatitis. - Skin acts as a barrier to most substances in cosmetics. - It becomes less protective if it becomes dry or injured. - Causing burning, itching and redness. - Irritants include: soaps, detergents, antiperspirants, eye cosmetics, moisturizers, hair-waving solutions and shampoos.

Allergic contact dermatitis. Some people are allergic to specific cosmetics ingredients. Causes redness, swelling, itching, and blisters. Common allergens: Fragrances, Preservatives and ingredients Commonly found in skin care products and cosmetics.

Cosmetics causing allergic reactions Fragrances - 5.000 fragrances used in cosmetics and skin care products. - A safe product must be marked fragrance free. Preservatives - Second most common cause of skin reactions. - They include paraben, urea, hydantoin and formaldehyde.

Skin Care Products
- Designed to maintain healthy skin. and include: A. Astringents. B. Moisturizers. C. Sunscreens A. Astringents. - Remove oils and soap residue from the skin. - Contain water, alcohol, propylene glycol, witch hazel, or salicylic acid. - May cause itching, burning, or tingling. B. Moisturizers - Prevent water loss by drying of the skin. - Cause cracks and wrinkles. Loses its role as a barrier, - Causes itching and pain. - Substances that stop water loss: petrolatum, mineral oil, lanolin, silicone. - Substances that attract water to skin: glycerin, propylene glycol, proteins.

Skin Care Products C. Sunscreens - Contain chemicals that absorb light and include: PABA esters, and cinnamates, which might cause allergic reactions. - They contain chemicals that reflect or scatter light. - Those are usually contain fine zinc oxide powder or titanium dioxide.

Personal care products 1. Skin Cleansers: - Soaps, shower gels, and bubble bath. - They remove dirt, body oils, and bacteria. Prevent odor and infection. But heavy use causes dry skin, itching, and irritation. 2. Shampoos: - Remove dirt and oils from scalp. Leave the hair soft and shiny. - Allergic reactions are rare. - But can dry the skin when rinsed over the body. 3. Conditioners: - Applied after shampoo, makes hair shiny, easy to comb and style. - They do not cause reactions.

Personal Care Products
4. Deodorants and Antiperspirants: - Kill bacteria and leave a pleasant smell, and prevent sweating. - Contain aluminum salts: some cause reactions, eczema, pigmentation. 5. Colored cosmetics: A. Facial - (Make-up). Used to color the face. (Make- Should be hypoallergenic, as it remains on skin for a long time. B. Eye Cosmetics. Used on (the most sensitive part): Cosmetics. - Eye shadow, eyeliner, and mascara. - Some are powdered, some water based. - They may cause irritation, and should never be shared. C. Lip Cosmetics (Lipsticks and Lip balms). - They moisturize dry lips, and provide sun protection. - Saliva is a common cause of contact dermatitis.

Hair Cosmetics 1. Dyes: - Temporary: wash out after one shampoo.
- Gradual: produce a color change over 2-3 weeks. - Usually do not cause allergy. - Permanent and Semipermanent can cause reaction. (better tested on small area behind the ear before using).

2. Permanent Waving:
- Make straight hair curly. - A perm solution breaks the chemical bonds in straight hair so become curled. Can damage the hair. - So hair should not be permed more once every 3 months.

Nail Cosmetics

Polishes:

- Can cause allergic contact dermatitis. - Rash develop on fingers, eyelids, face, and neck. - Formaldehyde is a common cause of allergy. - Red polishes cause yellow nail discoloration. - Cuticles prevent infections and should not be cut or removed.

2. Artifical Nails:
- It is illusion of women to create plastic nails. - They are attached with glue that contain methacrylate,

3. Sculptured Nails:
- Long nails permanently tilted over natural nails. - Cause sever pain, infection, dermatitis around and loss of nail. - Should be taken off every 3 months to allow natural nails to rest.

Skin care products designed to prevent premature aging.
- AHA: glycolic and salicylic acids, increase skin AHA: exfoliation, making skin smooth and soft. - Vitamin A, makes skin function better, but drying.
