Neuburger ENG 102-106 15 February 2012 Necessary Evil A Case of Assisted Suicide In A Case of Assisted Suicide by Jack Kevorkian, a women named Janet Adkins is diagnosed with Alzheimers disease and seeks out Dr. Kevorkian for assistance on committing suicide. The patient exhausts every treatment option available and is full willing to participate in the procedure, and society should respect her right to choose how she wants to end her life. Dr. Kevorkian is completely honest and self-less in his practices, I acted openly, ethically, legally, with complete and uncompromising honesty (438), not to mention Janet Adkins was well aware and competent of the choice she was making. Kevorkian states, The intelligent woman knew what the diagnosis portended, and at that instant decided she would not live to experience the horror of such a death (436). Dr. Kevorkian is doing her a favor by helping her end her life on her own terms. As for the portion of society that critiques Dr. Kevorkian, they should try to better understand the situation and put themselves in Janet Adkins shoes. One could see how Dr. Kevorkian could think he is doing her a service. 181
