CI 473 Name: Matt McCarter, Shawn Ledbetter, Jim Crist Class/Subject: 8th Social Studies Date: 2/13/2012 Standards: C.C.8.R.L.1 The key ideas and details: determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze it's development over the course of the text, including it's relationship to the characters, settings, and plot; provide an objective summary of the text. C.C.8.R.L.4 Craft instruction: determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meaning the analyze the impact that specific word choses on meaning and tone, including analogies or illusions to other texts.

Start of Class/Introduction : the word depression will be on the chalkboard as the students come into class. Once the students have taken their seats the instructor will ask the students if they know what the word means. Then the instructor will clarify what an economic depression means and give examples. This will also introduce the words unemployment, homeless, occupy wall street, and communist. These words will remain on the board through the entire lesson.

Lesson Instruction: 1. explain purpose setting question to students, how does Hollywood portray poor people? Discuss students reactions and opinions prior to reading article. 2. Group students in shared reading activity (5 per group) . Try to group students with lower ability with higher ability students. Students have to stop at the vocabulary word, define it together, and give an example. 3. Then class will come back together as a whole and each group will present one of the words. After each group attempts the words , the instructor will provide clarification and extra examples. After this, the students will then give examples of movies that portray poor people that they are familiar with and how the students feel about it. Discuss student reactions. Evaluation: the instructor will tell the students to take out a piece of paper numbering it 1-5 . Then the instructor will give examples the represent each vocabulary word. The students will write down which examples they think match the right word. Then the instructor will ask the students to write a 3 sentence response on what they thought about the text
