Strategies, lessons, best practices grained from participating in this Homeland Security professional development include:

Use of experts in fields of study to enrich lesson topic concepts and visitation of community places to use as learning resources, learning laboratories Development of overlay lessons, infusion of homeland security applications in our lesson planning Incorporation of technology, production of videos and podcasts Applying robotics for Homeland Security protection in areas of emergency medical services, removal of hazardous materials, limiting risk of humans for security or surveying sites It is important to integrate Homeland Security concepts into already existing curriculum to ensure real world current topics and authentic task are a part of what students learn and do. Students benefit by participating in more engaging lessons that also increase their knowledge of national security issues and practices that directly impact them in daily life. Students are exposed to new career opportunities. In our school we have engineering (Project Lead the Way-PLTW), agriculture (Curriculum for Agriculture Science Education-CASE) programs and Robotics Technology. The infusion of Homeland Security applications into the programs could act as additional endorsements of what students know and can do beyond the scope of the existing programs. Homeland Security offers unique opportunities for schools to visit current technology trends and the application of the modern approach to technology to solve today s issues. Perhaps, the most rewarding aspect of the program, it challenges both educators and students to involve themselves in the ongoing and most vital aspects of our nation s national security.
