Grass by Carl Sandburg was inspired by the Spanish-American War. He became aware of the meaningless of nations to wage war.

Sandburg believed that war s fallen soldiers were forgotten as well as used as tools. Grass tells the story of the battle of Austerlitz and Waterloo, the battle of Gettysburg, and the battle of Ypres and Verdun. Through the poem Sandburg shows the aspect of humanities indifference towards soldiers who were killed during war.
