CMP1 Quiz 10th Feb 2012 1.

Draw the following direction vectors in cubic unit cells: (a) [112] ,(b) [ 1 10],(c) [ 3 21 ]

2. Based on the knowledge of planar density for a FCC crystal, state which plane among (100), (110), (111) you expect to be more reactive and why? 3. How many atoms are there in a tiny crystal of size 1 m X 1 m X 1 m? Assume a monatomic solid of density 10 gm/cm3 and weight 60 gm/mole. 4. Indium(In) has a tetragonal structure with a = 0.3252 nm and c = 0.4946 nm. The density is 7.286 g/cm3 and atomic weight is 114.8 g/mol. Does In have the simple tetragonal or body-centered tetragonal structure? 5. Would you expect MgO or Mg to have the higher modulus of elasticity? Why? 6. An X-ray diffraction experiment using CuK radiation ( = 0.154 nm) gave the lowest angle of diffraction peak at 2 = 38 for a FCC lattice. Calculate the lattice parameter. 7. The ionization energy of K is 4.34 eV and the electron affinity of Cl is 3.61 eV. The dissociation energy of KCl ( i.e., KCl relative to the K and Cl stoms) is 4.66 eV. Calculate the electrostatic binding energy of KCl from these data and hence determine the equilibrium separation of the ions in KCl. 8. The maximum phase speed of an elastic wave in a 1D crystal of atoms of mass 6.3x10-27 kg is 3 km/s. If the atom density is 3.14x1010 m-1, calculate the cutoff frequency. 9. Given KCl has NaCl structure, explain why X-ray diffraction pattern for KCl varies from that for NaCl . Explain by structure factor change, if any. 10. High thermal conductivity in diamond can be explained using phonon scattering (by Normal and/or Umklapp processes). How? 11. Explain how the Debye temperature defines the nature of phonon energy in a material. 12. Find the phonon density of sates for a 2D isotropic solid in the Debye approximation. 13. Show that I-centered and F-centered tetragonal lattices are different descriptions of the same lattice. 14. Define Debye-Waller factor. 15. What is colour center?
