Lenten Midweek Worship

Our Mission Statement: Sharing the Word of God Through Worship and Teaching, With Love and Service, In Our Congregation and Our Community. Throughout the season of Lent we will gather for midweek prayer on Wednesdays at 12:05 and at 6:30 p.m. Our meditation will be on the Way of the Cross. In following the footsteps of Christ from his condemnation through to his burial, we are moved to take up our own cross. Christ reveals the way of the cross as the way to true life and to resurrection.
Week I: February 29th 1. Jesus is Condemned: We pray for the condemned and those who suffer injustice. 2. Jesus Takes Up His Cross: We pray for those facing great difficulties. Week II: March 7th 3. Jesus Falls: We pray for those who feel alone, helpless, or powerless 4. The Cross in Laid on Simon: We pray for those who offer help and encouragement. Week III: March 14th 5. Jesus meets the weeping women: We pray for those who grieve. 6. Jesus is stripped: We pray for the homeless, the hungry, and those who serve them. Week IV: March 21st 7. Jesus is nailed to the cross: We pray for those who are in great pain. 8. Jesus dies: We pray for all who have not forgiven another. Week V: March 28th 9. Jesus is taken down from the Cross: We pray for the Church on earth. 10. Jesus is buried: We pray in thanksgiving for the faithful departed.

A simple meal will be served immediately following the mid-day service and again from 5:45-6:15, just before the evening service; the mid-day meal will be provided by the Congregational Life Committee. March is Retreat Registration Month Have you circled April 28 on your calendar? Trinity members who plan to participate in our second annual One-day Retreat at Lutheran Memorial Camp are asked to register for the event by the end of March. Our focus this year is on Gods creation. We need to confirm attendance with LMC 30 days prior to our April 28 date so that they can plan staffing and order food. This year we are asking participants to pay a nominal $5 (maximum $20 per family) reservation fee. This earnest money will be refunded at the retreat. If someone wants to go or knows of someone who wants to go, but $5 is challenging, please contact Pastor Peterson and Trinity will cover the full cost ($25). Last year we ended up paying for quite a few people who planned to go but cancelled at the last minute, which is why a deposit is requested. Sign up sheets and registration forms will be available beginning March 10. Completed registrations can be placed in the Spiritual Formation mail box, placed in the bulletin board pocket, returned to the office or placed in the offering plate. Please be sure to mark the envelope containing your deposit as Retreat Registration. Please contact Amy Hehr if you are interested in helping to plan our retreat. Lutheran Memorial Camp is located near Fulton, Ohio, about a 45 minute drive north of Columbus. (see map on Trinity web site calendar for April 28)

The Latest from Pastor Peterson

[Jesus] called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Mark 8: 34-36 Not too long ago, my youngest sibling turned fifty. Im not sure how I feel about that, but Im pretty sure I dont like it. On the one hand, I can now give all of my siblings grief about being old, about being closer to the grave than to the cradle. On the other hand, my fiftieth birthday is not too far from now, so maybe I should hold my tongue. I once heard a psychologist reporting about mid-life crisis. At some point in the middle of their lives, she said, most folks realize that the world is going to continue on without them once they are gone, and that they cannot control, or soon will be unable to control, even their own small piece of the world. At this point, there are two directions one can goa person can either give in to bitterness and resentment, or one can accept the fact and decide to enjoy life all the more while they live. The crisis which the psychologist described should sound familiar for those following Christ, with at least three points added. First, people of faith recognize that letting go of the world requires a power beyond usthat we cannot let go of it except by the power of Gods Spirit working in us, and that when we let go of the world, we fall into the everlasting arms of the love of God. Second, this point of crisis, the point at which we are called to deny ourselves, is not a onetime event. It is the point at the center of our every day as disciples. As Paul writes, See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation! (2 Cor. 6:2). And as Luther writes, [Baptism] signifies that the old person in us with all sins and evil desires is to be drowned and die through daily sorrow for sin and through repentance, and on the other hand that a new person is to come forth and rise up to live in righteousness and purity before God forever (Small Catechism, III, iv). The third point is that this life of purity and righteousness before God which Luther wrote of is the way of the cross of Christ. We are called to true joy, but true joy cannot come without the love of God, the love of God is in Christ, and Christ is forever found taking up the cross. We are now in the season of Lent. These forty days are meant to help us prepare to celebrate the resurrection of Christ, and with it the promise of eternal life. We prepare to receive this new life in part by learning to let go of the old. Those Lenten disciplinesfasting, prayer, study, and works of charityare tools to help us learn to let go of the world. Or rather, they are exercises by which God can teach us to make our bodies, hearts, minds, and wealthour entire lives--available to God. I urge you to allow God to move you through these disciplines this Lent. Our mid-week services this season will introduce a devotional practice which is called The Way of the Cross. Each week we will consider a few stages along the way that led the Lord from his life among us to his death for us. Please join us for these devotions each Wednesday as we learn to live by taking up the cross. The end of it all, the end of following Christ, the end of the way of the cross, is the fullness of resurrected life. +Peace+ Pastor Chuck

Communications-Evangelism Team looks forward, backward

Trinitys Communications-Evangelism Team is working to preserve information about Trinitys heritage. A new section about the history of our church and our congregation is being added to our website, www.oldtrinity.com. In addition, the team has proposed a volunteer role of historian/archivist. We need to organize the historic files, make sure the documents and photos are appropriately protected and to digitize records against loss. This year, the entire Columbus community is reviewing its past as it is celebrating ColumbUS 200, the citys bicentennial celebration. This ministry team is asking how Trinity might participate in that celebration, and how participating in that celebration aligns with Trinitys mission. Combining a commemorative event celebrating our German heritage and our Oktoberfest event could be the way to achieve all of this. All of this discussion causes us to ask, looking forward, What is Trinitys evangelism message? It goes something like this: The grace, love and acceptance of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ are for you and you can find them here at Trinity. Trinitys Communication-Evangelism Team meets the 4th Tuesday of every month. You are invited to the next meeting, Tuesday, March 27 at 6 p.m.

From the Choir Loft

Trinitys music program continues to serve as a leader within the Central Ohio arts world. Members of Trinitys ensembles participate in musical ensembles throughout Columbus including the Columbus Symphony Chorus (presenting the magnificent Requiem by Maurice Durufl on May 4 and 5), the Columbus Gay Mens Chorus and the Capital University Choral Union. In addition, Trinitys Chancel Choir will be helping with three special events in the next several months: On Friday April 6, during the 7 pm Good Friday service, Trinitys Chancel Choir will sing the chorales from J.S. Bachs St. John Passion. These choral offerings will be sung within the context of the reading of the Passion story according to John. Sunday May 20 at 7 pm, the Chancel Choir will travel to Epiphany Lutheran Church in Pickerington to sing in Cantor Connections spring hymn festival. This festival celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians. Monday May 21 at 7:30 pm members of Trinitys Chancel Choir will join the University Chorus of the Ohio State University-Marion in presenting the Ohio premier of Donald Patriquins Titanic Requiem. Plans are in the works to share this work at Trinity as well (more details to come as they are confirmed). Music notes: -Do you have a favorite hymn that youd like to sing in worship? Please leave a note in the music directors mailbox (in the fellowship hall) or email music@oldtrinity.com and we will attempt to include your hymn in an upcoming worship service. -If you attended worship on Sunday February 19th, you noticed that our music featured a wide variety of styles. We are looking for instrumentalists to help lead worship when our services feature this blend of music. Do you or someone you know play guitar, bass or piano and would be interested in participating in this ministry? Contact Christopher Dent, director of music so that we might include you in leading worship.

Stewards of Our Earth From the Spiritual Formation Ministry Team

Over the past two years, Trinity members have increased their focus on stewardship of gifts of time, talent and financial resources. This increased thoughtfulness helps us to grow in our relationships with God and to grow Trinitys mission. Now we are adding yet another component of stewardship: stewardship of our earth and natural resources. Trinitys Green Team is now forming to review our stewardship of the earth and to consider how we can become better stewards. This spring Trinity will look specifically at recycling and composting. The Green Team meets again on Thursday, March 8, at 5:30 p.m. Youre invited. (The 6:30 time on the calendar is incorrect)

Sugges ons for the Trinity Tidings are always welcome

Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church is a Reconciling in Christ Congregation. The members of Trinity Lutheran Church recognize that God loves, Forgives, and calls each of us unconditionally and that every human being is created in the image of God. As a result, we welcome all people into our community of faith and invite them to join us as we seek to understand Gods love for us and struggle to be faithful messengers of that love in the world. Although our world is a place of alienation and brokenness, Christ calls us to reconciliation and wholeness. In response, we join hands with all our sisters and brothers, grateful for the unique gifts that each of us has to offer, regardless of our race, age, gender identity, marital status, physical and mental abilities, sexual orientation, national origin, or economic status. We celebrate together both the diversity of Gods creation and our unity as Gods people.
