Different people think differently on how to solve the same problem. This is a document on how to do searches based on pictures instead of words via Graphical Queries. This is the 2nd of a series that goes beyond the basics talked about in the 1st document. Two more are planned for the future to focus on Greek and Hebrew. Thanks to Dave Hooton and the Logos Newsgroup Community for providing the initial Faith with Christ or Jesus query used in this lesson. The object of this document is to demonstrate how to create Advanced Graphical Queries in Logos Libronix 3.x using English. As always, before starting you should backup your system completely in case you should accidentally delete or change the wrong file. I have striven to make sure this document is accurate and complete, but offer no guarantees; Use this document at your own risk This document can be freely copied and used by all. John's 2nd Guide to Basic Graphical Queries in Logos Libronix 3.x Begin by starting up Logos Libronix and closing any open resource windows. Go to the menu bar and click on Go, My Library, then find and open your favorite bible. (I use the NASB.) Resize it to fit in the right half of the screen. Next, click on File, New, select Graphical Query, and type in Faith and (Jesus or Christ) for the Name and click on OK.

Now click on TERM then click in the empty space (sandbox area) in the Graphical Query Window. Check the box next to Language and choose English in the drop-down box. Type in faith for the Term. Check the box next to Match Similar Words and click on OK. This forces the query to search for only English words that use faith for the stem (root word.)

John's 2nd Guide to Basic Graphical Queries in Logos Libronix 3.x Click on TERM again and then click in the sandbox area far enough away from the 1st Term you created so that no arrows appear. Check the box next to Language and choose English in the drop-down box. This time click on the Radio Button next to Word List. Notice how the screen changed. Click on Add, then Words (with an S.) Type in Christ Jesus and click on OK. Notice how the words have been separated for you automatically. Click on OK.

Now click and hold just beside the 1st Term you created (faith) when the arrow appears, and drag it to the 2nd Term. (Make sure you have the arrows pointing correctly as we go or your searches might not complete correctly. This is usually the problem if a search seems to hang or have incorrect or no results.) You can click on arrange at this point if you like, or you can manually move objects so they are more pleasing to the eye.

The arrow shows the order we want the words to appear in the verse. Now lets limit how far away the words can be from each other. Double click the arrow. Click on the radio button next to At most and type in 2 for the value in the box to its right.

If we were to do a search now, it would come back with all verses in English that contain the root word faith followed within two words by Jesus or Christ. Lets narrow a search a bit. Click on TERM again and then click in the sandbox area far enough away from the Terms you already created so that no arrows appear. Check the box next to Language and choose English in the drop-down box. Type in for the Term and check the box next to Exclude Term. Check the box next to Intervening Term and click on the Filter radio button. Click on OK. Now drag an arrow from the faith term to the in term, and another arrow from the in term to the Christ/Jesus term. Make sure your arrows are pointing in the right direction. (You can delete an arrow by just single clicking on it and pressing the Delete key on your keyboard. You now have a filter that will exclude verses that include the word in between your your terms. You might want to manually arrange the items at this point. (I find the Arrange button does not always work as well as one would hope.)

Click on Search. If you have a pre-defined collection of bibles, you might want to use it for the search, otherwise use your open resource. The NASB gives 2 verses. Some things to try on your own: Change the above Filter to Require, turn off the Exclude Term checkbox, and try the search again. Create a Collection containing all your English bibles for searching. Create searches in Greek and Hebrew. Do an English word search using the Opentext.org GNT as the resource. (Turn on the Interlinear View!)
