Manifestations: Abdominal pain and cramping Diarrhea Nausea and vomiting Fever Anorexia Distention Tenesmus (straining on defecation) Borborygmi (hyperactive bowel sounds)
Nursing Management: Stop all po intakes until symptoms subside. Assess patients symptoms and administer the prescribed symptomatic relief medications such as antacids and antiemetics. Monitor intake and output. Administer and regulate intravenous fluid to replace fluids lost. Encouraged the patient to eat proper diet (BRAT). Plan care to allow uninterrupted rest periods. Avoid patient from quick movements which can increase severity of nausea. If there is anal irritation because of diarrhea, clean the area carefully and apply repellent cream such as petroleum jelly. Wash hands thoroughly after giving care. Use standard precaution when handling vomitus or stools. Monitor patients vital signs.
