Name of Lesson: Mean, Median and Mode

Grade Level: 6-8 Subject: Mathematics Prepared by: Joseph Bodnar Overview and Purpose: This lesson will introduce the concepts of mean, median and mode. Examples of how to calculate each of these will be demonstrated. Guided practice will follow to enhance learning. Educational Standards

Determine the measure of central tendency (mean, median, mode) for a given set of data.

Objectives: Specify skills/information that will be learned

At * * *

the end of this lesson, students will be able to: (Knowledge Level) define the terms mean, median and mode (Comprehension Level) identify means, medians and modes (Application Level) calculate means, median and modes

Materials Needed: Promethean Board ActivExpressions Calculators Paper Pencils

Other Resources: (websites, videos, books, etc.) http://www.aleks.com/ ALEKS account

Information: Give and/or demonstration necessary information

1. In a data set, mean is the sum of all the data points, divided by the number of data points. 2. The median is the middle number in a data set when the data are put in order. 3. The mode is the number (or numbers) that occurs most frequently in a set of data.

Verification:

Steps to check for student understanding

1. Student is able to define mean, median and mode. 2. Student is able to identify if a value is the mean, median or mode with 80% accuracy. 3. Student is able to calculate the mean, median and mode of a data set with 80% accuracy.

Activity: Describe activity that will reinforce the lesson Students will log in to their ALEKS account and work on the mean, median and mode lesson (or another lesson if they have already mastered central tendency). Notes Students who have mastered central tendency can continue to work on their term project.
