The topic was about build a new generation of more robust and reliable storage systems via simpler

designs and powerful testing frameworks. The presenter informed us about the three trends that will dominate the storage systems of tomorrow: increasingly massive amounts of
data, the incredible growth of software complexity, and the increasing use of cheap and less reliable hardware.

The presentation focused on file systems like operating systems, distributed systems and cloud scale storage. Reliability is an important functionality to store and retrieve data. It is also one of the main challenges. Also partial failure is a reality. There are two failure modes whole system crash and whole disk failure. The presentation also discussed about shepherding and journaling where we run policies during checkpoint to maintain atomicity and consistency. The flaw with this is that it cannot handle checkpoint failure. Another method is to use policy specification table. Also file system checkers were discussed since every file system has its own FCSK. There is SQCK which is SQL based FCSK which makes it easy to crosscheck. Cloud storage is extremely reliable and highly available. But the problem is it has fragile operational protocols. Also upgrades and maintenance are issues. Future works possible are advancing cloud QA paradigms. Exploring reliability strategies for new storage technology. Revisiting reliability principles at cloud scale.
