Creating Character Project

Creative Writing: Patterson

Creating convincing, relevant, and interesting characters is the heart of writing fiction. This project is an attempt at developing such a character to create stories around. Stages: 1) Who is your character? (Age, Gender, Ethnicity, Physicality, Likes/Dislikes, Personality, Experiences, Occupation, Dreams/Goals, Fears, etc.) Develop a questionnaire for your character and answer it. Do you draw? Sketch him/her? 2) Where/when does your character live? (Develop Setting) 3) What conflicts might arise in your characters life? (Building story) 4) Start writing stories for your character! Imagine your character Activities 1. Your character is walking down a sidewalk in a small town. The sun has set; it is getting darker. Street light and house lights are turning on but the light is still sparse. See your character walking in this light. It begins to rain, slowly at first then harder eventually building up to a downpour. What will your character do, where is [s]he going, will [s]he take refuge, keep going, ? 2. Your character has been picked up by the cops. [S]he is placed in an interrogation room: hot light, one chair and a table, blank walls except for the two way mirror. How is your character acting? Why is [s]he there? The detective comes inwhat questions are asked? answers? 3. Your character just sent you a postcard. What picture is on front? What message is on back? What is the postmark? The stamp?
