TITLE: IMPROVING RELIABILITY AND DECREASING LOSSES OF ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WITH INFRARED THERMOGRAPHY ABSTRACT:

Temperature and the resulting thermal behavior of electric power generation and distribution equipment and industrial electrical systems and processes are the most critical factors in the reliability of any operation or facility. Temperature is by far the most measured quantity in any industrial environment. For these reasons, monitoring the thermal operating condition of electrical and electromechanical equipment is considered to be key to increasing operational reliability and decreasing electrical losses. In our demanding economic climate, failures of electrical systems are all too common. Whether they occur in the utility system itself or in a manufacturing plant or commercial building, the result will be increased costs, and decreased reliability. In worst case situations, the result is Injury or death. These failures, typically caused by high resistance heating of connection points, can often be prevented if they are found in their early stages. Unfortunately many times they are not visible to the eye until it is too late. Infrared thermography, however, provides a means of seeing these invisible heat patterns. When properly used, thermography enables maintenance personnel to see heating longbefore the damage is done. Once located, problems can be repaired or managed so catastrophic failures are avoidedresulting in significant savings and much safer work environments
