Ceramic matrix composites

Ultra high temperature assessments of commercial grade CMC materials are enabled at Swansea UTC by a suite of creep and fatigue test rigs capable of tensile load application at temperatures up to 1400oC. Fundamental studies detailing the sensitivity of the matrix phases to cracking, oxygen ingress and subsequent degradation of reinforcing continuous fibres have been conducted on silicon carbide and alumina matrix systems. Research to commence in 2009 will characterise mechanical behaviour in an oxide-oxide system to be processed via a low cost production route.
