By t hinking, He cannot be reduced t o t hought , even by t hinking hundreds of
t housands of t imes.

chupai chup na hova-ee j ay laa-ay rahaa liv t aar.
By remaining silent , inner silence is not obt ained, even by remaining lovingly
absorbed deep wit hin.

bhukhi-aa bhukh na ut ree j ay bannaa puree-aa bhaar.
The hunger of t he hungry is not appeased, even by piling up loads of worldly
goods.

sahas si-aanpaa lakh hohi t a ik na chalai naal.
Hundreds of t housands of clever t ricks, but not even one of t hem will go along
wit h you in t he end.

kiv sachi-aaraa ho-ee-ai kiv koorhai t ut ai paal.
So how can you become t rut hful? And how can t he veil of illusion be t orn away?

hukam raj aa-ee chalnaa naanak likhi-aa naal. | | 1| |
O Nanak, it is writ t en t hat you shall obey t he Hukam of His Command, and walk
in t he Way of His Will. | | 1| |

hukmee hovan aakaar hukam na kahi-aa j aa-ee.
By His Command, bodies are creat ed; His Command cannot be described.

hukmee hovan j ee-a hukam milai vadi-aa-ee.
By His Command, souls come int o being; by His Command, glory and great ness
are obt ained.

hukmee ut am neech hukam likh dukh sukh paa-ee-ah.
By His Command, some are high and some are low; by His Writ t en Command,
pain and pleasure are obt ained.

iknaa hukmee bakhsees ik hukmee sadaa bhavaa-ee-ah.
Some, by His Command, are blessed and forgiven; ot hers, by His Command,
wander aimlessly forever.

hukmai andar sabh ko baahar hukam na ko-ay.
Everyone is subj ect t o His Command; no one is beyond His Command.

Some sing of His Glorious Virt ues, Great ness and Beaut y.

gaavai ko vidi-aa vikham veechaar.
Some sing of knowledge obt ained of Him, t hrough difficult philosophical st udies.

Some sing t hat He fashions t he body, and t hen again reduces it t o dust .

gaavai ko j ee-a lai fir dayh.
Some sing t hat He t akes life away, and t hen again rest ores it .

gaavai ko j aapai disai door.
Some sing t hat He seems so very far away.

gaavai ko vaykhai haadraa hadoor.
Some sing t hat He wat ches over us, face t o face, ever-present .

There is no short age of t hose who preach and t each.

kat h kat h kat hee kot ee kot kot .
Millions upon millions offer millions of sermons and st ories.

daydaa day laiday t hak paahi.
The Great Giver keeps on giving, while t hose who receive grow weary of
receiving.

j ugaa j ugant ar khaahee khaahi.
Throughout t he ages, consumers consume.

hukmee hukam chalaa-ay raahu.
The Commander, by His Command, leads us t o walk on t he Pat h.

O Nanak, He blossoms fort h, Carefree and Unt roubled. | | 3| |

saachaa saahib saach naa-ay bhaakhi-aa bhaa-o apaar.
True is t he Mast er, True is His Name-speak it wit h infinit e love.

aakhahi mangahi dahi dahi daat karay daat aar.
People beg and pray, "Give t o us, give t o us", and t he Great Giver gives His
Gift s.

fayr ke agai rakhee-ai j it disai darbaar.
So what offering can we place before Him, by which we might see t he Darbaar
of His Court ?

muhou ke bolan bolee-ai j it sun Dharay pi-aar.
What words can we speak t o evoke His Love?

amrit vaylaa sach naa-o vadi-aa-ee veechaar.
I n t he Amrit Vaylaa, t he ambrosial hours before dawn, chant t he True Name,
and cont emplat e His Glorious Great ness.

karmee aavai kaprhaa nadree mokh du-aar.
By t he karma of past act ions, t he robe of t his physical body is obt ained. By His
Grace, t he Gat e of Liberat ion is found.

naanak ayvai j aanee-ai sabh aapay sachiaar. | | 4| |
O Nanak, know t his well: t he True One Himself is All. | | 4| |

t haapi-aa na j aa-ay keet aa na ho-ay.
He cannot be est ablished, He cannot be creat ed.

aapay aap niranj an so-ay.
He Himself is I mmaculat e and Pure.

Those who serve Him are honored.

gaavee-ai sunee-ai man rakhee-ai bhaa-o.
Sing, and list en, and let your mind be filled wit h love.

Your pain shall be sent far away, and peace shall come t o your home.

The Guru is Shiva, t he Guru is Vishnu and Brahma; t he Guru is Paarvat i and
Lakhshmi.

j ay ha-o j aanaa aakhaa naahee kahnaa kat han na j aa-ee.
Even knowing God, I cannot describe Him; He cannot be described in words.

guraa ik dahi buj haa-ee.
The Guru has given me t his one underst anding:

sabhnaa j ee-aa kaa ik daat aa so mai visar na j aa-ee. | | 5| |
t here is only t he One, t he Giver of all souls. May I never forget Him! | | 5| |

I f I am pleasing t o Him, t hen t hat is my pilgrimage and cleansing bat h. Wit hout
pleasing Him, what good are rit ual cleansings?

j ayt ee sirat h upaa-ee vaykhaa vin karmaa ke milai la-ee.
I gaze upon all t he creat ed beings: wit hout t he karma of good act ions, what are
t hey given t o receive?

mat vich rat an j avaahar maanik j ay ik gur kee sikh sunee.
Wit hin t he mind are gems, j ewels and rubies, if you list en t o t he Guru's
Teachings, even once.

guraa ik dahi buj haa-ee.
The Guru has given me t his one underst anding:

sabhnaa j ee-aa kaa ik daat aa so mai visar na j aa-ee. | | 6| |
t here is only t he One, t he Giver of all souls. May I never forget Him! | | 6| |

j ay j ug chaaray aarj aa hor dasoonee ho-ay.
Even if you could live t hroughout t he four ages, or even t en t imes more,

navaa khanda vich j aanee-ai naal chalai sabh ko-ay.
and even if you were known t hroughout t he nine cont inent s and followed by all,

changa naa-o rakhaa-ay kai j as keerat j ag lay-ay.
wit h a good name and reput at ion, wit h praise and fame t hroughout t he world-

j ay t is nadar na aavee t a vaat na puchhai kay.
st ill, if t he Lord does not bless you wit h His Glance of Grace, t hen who cares?
What is t he use?

keet aa andar keet kar dosee dos Dharay.
Among worms, you would be considered a lowly worm, and even cont empt ible
sinners would hold you in cont empt .

naanak nirgun gun karay gunvant i-aa gun day.
O Nanak, God blesses t he unwort hy wit h virt ue, and best ows virt ue on t he
virt uous.

No one can even imagine anyone who can best ow virt ue upon Him. | | 7| |

List ening-t he oceans, t he lands of t he world and t he net her regions of t he
underworld.

The fait hful have int uit ive awareness and int elligence.

The fait hful know about all worlds and realms.

mannai muhi chot aa naa khaa-ay.
The fait hful shall never be st ruck across t he face.

The fait hful do not have t o go wit h t he Messenger of Deat h.

The fait hful do not follow empt y religious rit uals.

mannai Dharam sayt ee san-banDh.
The fait hful are firmly bound t o t he Dharma.

The fait hful are saved, and carried across wit h t he Sikhs of t he Guru.

mannai naanak bhavahi na bhikh.
The fait hful, O Nanak, do not wander around begging.

The chosen ones, t he self-elect , are accept ed and approved.

panchaa kaa gur ayk Dhi-aan.
The chosen ones medit at e single-mindedly on t he Guru.

No mat t er how much anyone t ries t o explain and describe t hem,

t he act ions of t he Creat or cannot be count ed.

Dhoul Dharam da-i-aa kaa poot .
The myt hical bull is Dharma, t he son of compassion;

t his is what pat ient ly holds t he eart h in it s place.

One who underst ands t his becomes t rut hful.

Dhavlai upar kayt aa bhaar.
What a great load t here is on t he bull!

So many worlds beyond t his world-so very many!

The names and t he colors of t he assort ed species of beings

were all inscribed by t he Ever-flowing Pen of God.

ayhu laykhaa likh j aanai ko-ay.
Who knows how t o writ e t his account ?

laykhaa likhi-aa kayt aa ho-ay.
Just imagine what a huge scroll it would t ake!

kayt aa t aan su-aalihu roop.
What power! What fascinat ing beaut y!

kayt ee daat j aanai koun koot .
And what gift s! Who can know t heir ext ent ?

keet aa pasaa-o ayko kavaa-o.
You creat ed t he vast expanse of t he Universe wit h One Word!

From t he Word, come t he writ t en and spoken words and hymns.

akhraa sir sanj og vakhaan.
From t he Word, comes dest iny, writ t en on one's forehead.

But t he One who wrot e t hese Words of Dest iny-no words are writ t en on His
Forehead.

j iv furmaa-ay t iv t iv paahi.
As He ordains, so do we receive.

j ayt aa keet aa t ayt aa naa-o.
The creat ed universe is t he manifest at ion of Your Name.

vin naavai naahee ko t haa-o.
Wit hout Your Name, t here is no place at all.

kudrat kavan kahaa veechaar.
How can I describe Your Creat ive Power?

wat er can wash away t he dirt .

moot paleet ee kaparh ho-ay.
When t he clot hes are soiled and st ained by urine,

day saaboon la-ee-ai oh Dho-ay.
soap can wash t hem clean.

bharee-ai mat paapaa kai sang.
But when t he int ellect is st ained and pollut ed by sin,

oh Dhopai naavai kai rang.
it can only be cleansed by t he Love of t he Name.

punnee paapee aakhan naahi.
Virt ue and vice do not come by mere words;

kar kar karnaa likh lai j aahu.
act ions repeat ed, over and over again, are engraved on t he soul.

aapay beej aapay hee khaahu.
You shall harvest what you plant .

naanak hukmee aavhu j aahu. | | 20| |
O Nanak, by t he Hukam of God's Command, we come and go in reincarnat ion.

Pilgrimages, aust ere discipline, compassion and charit y

-t hese, by t hemselves, bring only an iot a of merit .

suni-aa mani-aa man keet aa bhaa-o.
List ening and believing wit h love and humilit y in your mind,

ant argat t irat h mal naa-o.
cleanse yourself wit h t he Name, at t he sacred shrine deep wit hin.

sabh gun t ayray mai naahee ko-ay.
All virt ues are Yours, Lord, I have none at all.

vin gun keet ay bhagat na ho-ay.
Wit hout virt ue, t here is no devot ional worship.

su-asat aat h banee barmaa-o.
I bow t o t he Lord of t he World, t o His Word, t o Brahma t he Creat or.

sat suhaan sadaa man chaa-o.
He is Beaut iful, True and Et ernally Joyful.

kavan so vaylaa vakhat kavan kavan t hit kavan vaar.
What was t hat t ime, and what was t hat moment ? What was t hat day, and what
was t hat dat e?

kavan se rut ee maahu kavan j it ho-aa aakaar.
What was t hat season, and what was t hat mont h, when t he Universe was
creat ed?

vayl na paa-ee-aa pandt ee j e hovai laykh puraan.
The Pandit s, t he religious scholars, cannot find t hat t ime, even if it is writ t en in
t he Puraanas.

vakhat na paa-i-o kaadee-aa j e likhan laykh kuraan.
That t ime is not known t o t he Qazis, who st udy t he Koran.

t hit vaar naa j ogee j aanai rut maahu naa ko-ee.
The day and t he dat e are not known t o t he Yogis, nor is t he mont h or t he
season.

j aa kart aa sirt hee ka-o saaj ay aapay j aanai so-ee.
The Creat or who creat ed t his creat ion-only He Himself knows.

kiv kar aakhaa kiv saalaahee ki-o varnee kiv j aanaa.
How can we speak of Him? How can we praise Him? How can we describe Him?
How can we know Him?

naanak aakhan sabh ko aakhai ik doo ik si-aanaa.
O Nanak, everyone speaks of Him, each one wiser t han t he rest .

vadaa saahib vadee naa-ee keet aa j aa kaa hovai.
Great is t he Mast er, Great is His Name. What ever happens is according t o His
Will.

O Nanak, one who claims t o know everyt hing shall not be decorat ed in t he
world hereaft er. | | 21| |

paat aalaa paat aal lakh aagaasaa aagaas.
There are net her worlds beneat h net her worlds, and hundreds of t housands of
heavenly worlds above.

orhak orhak bhaal t hakay vayd kahan ik vaat .
The Vedas say t hat you can search and search for t hem all, unt il you grow
weary.

The soul is pollut ed by skept icism; how can it be cleansed?

man Dhovahu sabad laagahu har si-o rahhu chit laa-ay.
Wash your mind by at t aching it t o t he Shabad, and keep your consciousness
focused on t he Lord.

Enforcing His Order, He Himself sees all. How rare are t hose who, as Gurmukh,

They break t heir bonds, and at t ain liberat ion; t hey enshrine t he Shabad wit hin

gurmukh j is no aap karay so hovai aykas si-o liv laa-ay.
Those whom t he Lord Himself makes Gurmukh, lovingly focus t heir
consciousness on t he One Lord.

Those humble beings remain awake and aware, wit hin whose minds, by Guru's
Grace, t he Lord abides; t hey chant t he Ambrosial Word of t he Guru's Bani.

According t o His Will, t he child is born, and t he family is very pleased.

liv chhurhkee lagee t arisnaa maa-i-aa amar vart aa-i-aa.
Love for t he Lord wears off, and t he child becomes at t ached t o desires; t he
script of Maya runs it s course.

ayh maa-i-aa j it har visrai moh upj ai bhaa-o dooj aa laa-i-aa.
This is Maya, by which t he Lord is forgot t en; emot ional at t achment and love of
dualit y well up.

Your t hirst shall not be quenched by any means, unt il you at t ain t he subt le
essence of t he Lord.

har ras paa-ay palai pee-ai har ras bahurh na t arisnaa laagai aa-ay.
I f you do obt ain t he subt le essence of t he Lord, and drink in t his essence of t he
Lord, you shall not be t roubled by desire again.

ayhu har ras karmee paa-ee-ai sat gur milai j is aa-ay.
This subt le essence of t he Lord is obt ained by good karma, when one comes t o
meet wit h t he True Guru.

Wit hout wat er, t he crop wit hers, and it will not bring a good price.

I f we do not meet t he Lord, our Friend, how can we find our place of rest ?

I n t he Lord are all pleasures which please t he mind.

As t he Lord wishes, so He act s, and so His creat ures act .

j o parabh keet ay aapnay say-ee kahee-ahi Dhan.
They alone are called blessed, whom God has made His Own.

aapan lee-aa j ay milai vichhurh ki-o rovann.
I f people could meet t he Lord by t heir own effort s, why would t hey be crying
out in t he pain of separat ion?

j ayhaa beej ai so lunai mat hai j o likhi-aas.
As you plant , so shall you harvest ; your dest iny is recorded on your forehead.

rain vihaanee pachhut aanee ut h chalee ga-ee niraas.
The life-night passes away, and in t he end, one comes t o regret and repent , and
t hen depart wit h no hope at all.

j in kou saaDhoo bhayt ee-ai so dargeh ho-ay khalaas.
Those who meet wit h t he Holy Saint s are liberat ed in t he Court of t he Lord.

kar kirpaa parabh aapnee t ayray darsan ho-ay pi-aas.
Show Your Mercy t o me, O God; I am t hirst y for t he Blessed Vision of Your
Darshan.

parabh t uDh bin dooj aa ko nahee naanak kee ardaas.
Wit hout You, God, t here is no ot her at all. This is Nanak's humble prayer.

The drops of t he Lord's Nect ar are so beaut iful! Meet ing t he Holy Saint , we drink

van t in parabh sang ma-oli-aa samrat h purakh apaar.
The forest s and t he meadows are rej uvenat ed and refreshed wit h t he Love of
God, t he All-powerful, I nfinit e Primal Being.

har milnai no man lochdaa karam milaavanhaar.
My mind yearns t o meet t he Lord. I f only He would show His Mercy, and unit e
me wit h Himself!

lakh seegaar banaa-i-aa kaaraj naahee kayt .
She may wear t housands of ornament s, but t hey are of no use at all.

j it din dayh binsasee t it vaylai kahsan parayt .
On t hat day when t he body perishes-at t hat t ime, she becomes a ghost .

pakarh chalaa-in doot j am kisai na daynee bhayt .
The Messenger of Deat h seizes and holds her, and does not t ell anyone his
secret .

chhad kharhot ay khinai maahi j in si-o lagaa hayt .
And her loved ones-in an inst ant , t hey move on, leaving her all alone.

hat h marorhai t an kapay si-aahhu ho-aa sayt .
She wrings her hands, her body writ hes in pain, and she t urns from black t o
whit e.

As she has plant ed, so does she harvest ; such is t he field of karma.

Those who love t he Guru, t he Prot ect or and Savior, in Bhaadon, shall not be

I n t he mont h of Assu, my love for t he Lord overwhelms me. How can I go and
meet t he Lord?

man t an pi-aas darsan ghanee ko-ee aan milaavai maa-ay.
My mind and body are so t hirst y for t he Blessed Vision of His Darshan. Won't
someone please come and lead me t o him, O my mot her.

sant sahaa-ee paraym kay ha-o t in kai laagaa paa-ay.
The Saint s are t he helpers of t he Lord's lovers; I fall and t ouch t heir feet .

vin parabh ki-o sukh paa-ee-ai dooj ee naahee j aa-ay.
Wit hout God, how can I find peace? There is nowhere else t o go.

Those who have t ast ed t he sublime essence of His Love, remain sat isfied and

Those whom t he Husband Lord has unit ed wit h Himself, shall not be separat ed
from Him again.

parabh vin dooj aa ko nahee naanak har sarnaa-ay.
Wit hout God, t here is no ot her at all. Nanak has ent ered t he Sanct uary of t he
Lord.

Corrupt ion shall not t ouch you, when you j oin t he Holy Saint s and sing t he
Lord's Praises.

j ah t ay upj ee t ah milee sachee pareet samaahu.
From where it originat ed, t here t he soul is blended again. I t is absorbed in t he
Love of t he True Lord.

kar geh leenee paarbarahm bahurh na vichhurhi-aahu.
When t he Supreme Lord God grasps someone's hand, he shall never again
suffer separat ion from Him.

Sexual desire and anger shall not seduce you, and t he dog of greed shall depart .

sachai maarag chaldi-aa ust at karay j ahaan.
Those who walk on t he Pat h of Trut h shall be praised t hroughout t he world.

Be kind t o all beings-t his is more merit orious t han bat hing at t he sixt y-eight
sacred shrines of pilgrimage and t he giving of charit y.

That person, upon whom t he Lord best ows His Mercy, is a wise person.

sayj suhaavee sarab sukh hun dukhaa naahee j aa-ay.
My bed is beaut iful, and I have all comfort s. I feel no sadness at all.

ichh punee vadbhaagnee var paa-i-aa har raa-ay.
My desires have been fulfilled-by great good fort une, I have obt ained t he
Sovereign Lord as my Husband.

mil sahee-aa mangal gaavhee geet govind alaa-ay.
Join wit h me, my sist ers, and sing t he songs of rej oicing and t he Hymns of t he
Lord of t he Universe.

har j ayhaa avar na dis-ee ko-ee dooj aa lavai na laa-ay.
There is no ot her like t he Lord-t here is no equal t o Him.

halat palat savaari-on nihchal dit ee-an j aa-ay.
He embellishes t his world and t he world hereaft er, and He gives us our
permanent home t here.

sansaar saagar t ay rakhi-an bahurh na j anmai Dhaa-ay.
He rescues us from t he world-ocean; never again do we have t o run t he cycle of
reincarnat ion.

Those who medit at e on t he Perfect Guru, t he Lord-I ncarnat e-t hey are j udged
t rue in t he Court of t he Lord.

sarab sukhaa niDh charan har bha-oj al bikham t aray.
The Lord's Feet are t he Treasure of all peace and comfort for t hem; t hey cross
over t he t errifying and t reacherous world-ocean.

paraym bhagat t in paa-ee-aa bikhi-aa naahi j aray.
They obt ain love and devot ion, and t hey do not burn in corrupt ion.

koorh ga-ay dubiDhaa nasee pooran sach bharay.
Falsehood has vanished, dualit y has been erased, and t hey are t ot ally
overflowing wit h Trut h.

paarbarahm parabh sayvday man andar ayk Dharay.
They serve t he Supreme Lord God, and enshrine t he One Lord wit hin t heir
minds.
