Invitation: Math for High Tech Materials & Systems workshop Dear colleague, As you are probably aware,

High Tech Materials & Systems is one of the nine so-called topsectors identified by the Dutch government as the most important for the national economy. In the coming years innovation and R&D initiatives in these domains will enjoy extra attention from thegovernment, as well as funding agencies (NWO, STW, Agenstschap NL, KNAW). Platform Wiskunde Nederland (PWN) has decided that the topsector initiatives are very important for Mathematics, and might offer unique chances for further development (growth) of mathematics in the Netherlands. PWN Committee on Innovation (PWN-I) has been asked to prepare proposals in the relevant domains. On behalf of the PWN committee on Innovation, we would like to invite you to participate in a workshop ``Math for High Tech Systems & Materials'' on October 26, 2011 in Eindhoven, location TU/e, time 14:00-17:00. We hope you respond positively and will join us for a discussion. Please confirm your participation by emailing to pwn.innovatie@gmail.com To facilitate the discussion, we would like to ask you to get acquainted with the topsector plan ``High Tech Systems & Materials'' (attached). We would also appreciate if you prepare one highlight from your research in High Tech Systems/Material domain: a PowerPoint or a pdf slide, half A4. Please email your highlight to pwn.innovatie@gmail.com before October 20, 2011. Finally, we would also like to ask you to think about the following questions: Do you see areas/problems/questions in the domain of High Tech Materials & Systems which will profit immediately from the involvement of mathematicians. Which developments in High Tech Materials & Systems would require development of new mathematical apparatus in the coming 3 to 5 years? Which factors limit or obstruct your cooperation with industry, small and medium enterprises (MKB), (semi-)governmental organizations (e.g., hospitals, knowledge institutes)?

On behalf of the PWN committee on Innovation, John Koster, ASML Wil Schilders, TU/e Evgeny Verbitskiy, UL/RUG
