Reflective Letter Liz Lane Mary Elizabeth Buckingham WRD 103 Reflective Letter In this class I have learned

about rhetoric and how it affects the way people tw ist their words in speech-like, formal writing setting. In the Fieldwork essay I focused on the ways people acted in a social setting. I was not entirely satisf ied with that essay and my writing capabilities. However, I intend to revise it for the portfolio. In the other essay, the Obama speech essay I focused on the way he used pathos a nd embellished language. I think that essay was a good reflection on my writing. The way I stated facts, and the tone in which I used to convey what I thought a bout the speech was true to my writing. In the class we discussed a lot of diffe rent types of rhetoric and how they affect speech and formal writing. It is a go od way to get ones point across, and I feel I have gained a lot of knowledge tha t I didn t have prior to this class. We also talked about propaganda in politics. I thought that that was very eye opening, because before this class I had never re ally noticed how much glittering generalities politicians use in their speeches, campaigns and so on and so forth. Oddly the Obama essay was my favorite essay I have written this quarter because I thought I would detest writing it because I detest politics, however I found it to be an interesting topic. Finding the fak eness in political speeches turned out to be fun. In the class we also discussed gender roles. I think this was important to go ov er, however though I do think genders play a big part in communication; I think that personalities override gender. I went into detail in my paper. The observat ion process was interesting, but I found that writing the essay solely off notes and memory was difficult. It was difficult to know what exactly was expected in this essay because it was such a subjective topic. I have enjoyed the topics we have gone over thus far in the class and I have fou nd them to be good tools to use in my writing, and I know I will use them later on in my writing as well. I look forward to learning more and moving onto new to pics.
