Model Theory (Spring 2012) Second homework assignment

Deadline: March 14. Submit your solutions by handing them to the lecturer at the beginning of class. Success!

Exercise 1 (30 points) Consider a rst-order language with constants {ci | i < }, and let T be the theory {ci = cj | i < j < }. Show in max 2 pages A4 that T has quantier elimination. Exercise 2 (30 points) Show for a given rst-order theory T in a signature L, that (a) (b) (c). (a) T has quantier elimination. (b) For any model B of T , and any nitely generated submodel A of B, the set T diag(A) is a complete theory. (c) For any pair fi : A Bi of embeddings of L-structures (i = 0, 1), where each Bi is a model of T , and A is nitely generated, there is an L-structure C and elementary embeddings gi : Bi C such that g1 f1 = g0 f0 . (Hint for (b) (a): given a rst-order formula (x), add a tuple c of fresh constants to L, and consider the set := {(c) quantier free | T (c) (c)}. Prove that T (c).) Exercise 3 (40 points) For convenience in this exercise assume that we are working with a signature without constants or function symbols. Write A B to denote that A and B make the same L -sentences true. (a) Prove that A B implies A B. (b) Prove or disprove: if A n B for all n , then A B.
