Danielle Williams WRD 103 Professor Garvey 23 January 2012 Essay #2 Proposal It has been said that sexes communicate differently by nature. Women apparently prefer verbal tasks while men prefer action to words. I believe this to be very true seeing as if anyone is ever asked the question who talks more or who dominates a conversation more, unless there are extenuating circumstances, the average person will more than likely say female instead of male. Based on my readings of Women Talk Too Much and What Language Barriers statistics have proved the typical stereotype not to be true or false. It was said that basically the genders are equally dominant This is all because it is hard to measure what is talking too much. I plan to see if there is any truth to these stereotypes of women talking more in a conversational environment. During some of the weekdays a lot of us at my dorm may convene in one friends room after our days die down and just talk. It provides us with the opportunity to get in a little social time after a long day of class. I will be the first to admit that its always more females than males which make for a very interesting study because the female gender will already be dominant in presence. The question is will they be dominant as far as conversational skills. I will be examining and partaking in two groups. There is also a racial/cultural difference between both groups which makes for a variable that may affect conversational dominance as well. Another aspect that I will be examining is both of the gay men in each group and how their conversational skills affect the stereotype of men not talking much.

I personally think that the women will be more dominant in the conversations without a doubt if put into a group setting because thats how women are by nature. A valid assumption based on experience by Tony Kornheiser is that women talk so much not because of their inability to prioritize information but because they dont think life is as simple as men do.
