This year all students who achieved A Grade were awarded with a token and a certificate. The Girls Annual Day theme was Namaaz and its significance. Hence, practical wudhoo, tayammum and Salaah were demonstrated. This was very beneficial for the students and mothers as well. The Graduation of Class 10 and Completion Ceremony of Class 11 were held on the 20th of November. This too was a remarkable event which the students will cherish forever. FAREWELL NOTES (COMMITTEE 2011/2012)

This year was quite a ride in terms of community service. I remember the first bulletin was such an uphill task and so was the second but when I got used to it is when my work started becoming interesting and something worth to be done. I used to convey my messages through my editorial note and through my articles. Being in the Knowledge committee has taught me to manage my time well. You see I was always bad at time management and even worse being punctual but now all those problems are history! I thank Aamir Kanji, Imran Abbas and Mazherabbas Fazel and Farhan Yusuf for giving the support when I needed it. I thank Allah my Lord for showing me the ways of publicizing education in a form which everyone likes. Shaneali Yusufali. I have been with the Knowledge Bulletin for the past two year and have enjoyed every minute of it. One of the best parts about being in the Knowledge Team was that I learnt how the Community Elders and the Youths of today coordinate and share the same vision of bringing Spiritual & Secular awareness to everyone in our society at large. I thank Allah (s.w.t) for giving me the strength and qualities for serving the community. I would also like to express gratitude to my parents for giving me the support at all times and am grateful to my grandparents for inculcating in me the love for Religion and serving my community. Last but not the least; I would like to thank the Debating Society for taking me up on their team. I have been able use my creativity and share my talents for the advancement of the youths. Fadhil Alishan. Well, I really dont know how to start this farewell note but I have to say this year has been the best year ever. Even though in the start I thought its just for community service I slowly started enjoying being in Debating Society even though it was a little hard to cope with it. Writing the minutes of the meeting and going to the meetings was difficult. But, in the end I felt it quite intriguing and would like to thank the patrons, my advisors Farhan Yusuf and Mazhar Fazal who guided me through and supported us and well I have to say Im going to miss my whole committee and I would also like to thank my chairman Aamir kanji and the committee as well. With this issue of the knowledge bulletin, the term for the current team comes to an end. We would like to acknowledge the work the team has put in and we hope they continue serving the community in whatever aspect they are blessed with. We sincerely pray that all of us get the tawfiq to continue serving the community with sincerity. Good luck to the new team! Iltemase Dua. Farhan Yusuf and Mazhar Fazal In the Name of my Lord, The Most Beneficent, The Most Merciful. I really do not know where to start from. But I must say that my first year in Debating Society was a long and tough journey to achieve my aims. I had a really helpful team and a very distinct type of people they were. I just cannot express my gratitude enough to the following people for their consistent help in achieving our mission: Farhan Yusuf, Mazher Fazal, Imran Abbas, Aliabbas Manji and Shabbirally Mussa. These people have really helped throughout the year with amazing ideas, help as well as understanding my opinions. This responsibility has taught me many things such as time management, leadership skills as well as social skills. I remember that launching the bulletins every month were the moments which I felt that I actually did do something for Allah (SWT) and my community. Every Monday meetings as well as sales have surely come to an end but this however, will not stop me from helping my community. As I need progress in leading another committee for the upcoming year I must say that all the days hard work and difficulties throughout the year have made me understand the importance of community service. I would like to also thank Fatimbai Somji and Sofiabai Bharwani for their consistent help on the ladies side. Lastly, but not least I would like to extended my sincere thanks to my mother & father who always were by my side ready to help me in any way possible. Without them, I believe I would not have reached this far. In the end, I would like to congratulate the incoming chairman Ali Fayyaz Jafer and I hope he and his committee will do no less in achieving the pleasure of Allah (SWT). Wasalaam. Aamir Kanji

CHAIRMAN 2011/2012 FAREWELL NOTE

Salaamun Alaykum. Each year since the revival of the Debating Society, there have been notable and significant changes for the betterment of this organization. Alhamdulilah, by the grace of the Almighty, each year there have been remarkable improvements and enhancements than the previous year, and this year is no difference to this trend. This year, the Debating Society, has introduced three new Sub-committees, namely the Spiritual Sub-committee, the Web Sub-committee, and the Welfare Sub-committee. All three of these Sub-committees have differing specific goals and objectives, yet share one big aim with all other Sub-committees of the Debating Society; to learn, teach and serve for the Almighty! I must admit, I have always been yearning for my days as the President of the Debating Society to come to an end as I will be relieved and alleviated from my responsibilities and duties; however, I am obliged to reveal and accept that being the President has enabled me to learn a lot primarily due various experiences which lead to valuable lessons. I have just one advice for my younger brothers in Madrasah. Never ever neglect and abandon an opportunity to serve your fellow Madrasah students or our Community at large. Trust me, you will never regret it, and it will be advantageous to your own development as it allows you to undergo various situations that gives you a lot to learn. I would like to extend my wholehearted gratefulness to the Almighty for giving me the strength to complete this year with great success. Moreover, I wish to thank my parents for their endless encouragement. Lastly, I wish to thank both the Debating Society Committee and the Patronage for their constant support! I also wish to extend my gratefulness to the Knowledge Sub-committee for their endless efforts in publishing these monthly bulletins. Was-Salaam, Shabbirali Mussa DS President 2011/1432

MAYTHAM AL TAMMAR
Maytham al-Tammar is one of the greatest companions of Imam Ali (A.S) and had a lot of praise for Imam (a.s). He got his name of al-Tammar because of selling dates. Maytham has said about Imam Ali (a.s), Only Allah knows what lessons I learnt from Ali bin Abu Talib. I did not find a human on this earth like Ali (a.s). If you want to see the embodiments of humility then look at Imam Ali (a.s).Maytham says, When I used to sell dates, Imam Ali told me that whatever you earn in a halal way even if it is little, it is a worship of Allah (s.w.t). He then added, Imam Ali (a.s) used to sit near me in the market when I was selling dates. Which king would next to a man selling dates? But Imam came and sat near me. That is why Imam Ali (a.s) told Maytham, Remain loyal towards me and I will teach you the mysteries of the world. And that is why Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (a.s) said, The secrets that Ali told Maytham were equivalent to the secrets that Allah (SWT) gave to His messengers, they were equivalent to the secrets that Allah (SWT) gave to his closest angels. This is because Maytham had a heart that could contain these secrets. Maytham says that the secret of this humility of Imam (a.s) is because of his prayers. Once Imam (a.s) was asked, Do you prefer being in the mosque praying to Allah (s.w.t) or do you prefer being in heaven? To this, he replied, I prefer being in the mosque because in the mosque, Allah is pleased with me but in heaven I am pleased with myself. Maytham also said, The secret was not only salaah but after his prayers, Imam used to raise his hand and say, Al-Afw (I am sorry) a hundred times.
The most generous person is the one who offers help to those who do not expect him to help. (Bihar al- Anwar, Vol. 78, P. 121) Imam Husein (A.S)
12

Maytham al-Tammar was a great companion of Imam Ali (a.s) and that is why Imam (a.s) taught him about some things that when people will die and knowledge as to the troubles that people will face. This is very essential and was proven on many occasions, some of which are: And then Maytham uses his knowledge about peoples death and posed a question for Habib ibn Mazaher, It is as if I see a man coming from Kufa to defend the grandson of Rasulullah (saww) at Karbala? Are you ready for that day or will you leave the grandson alone? Habib replied, I will be ready to stand with the grandson of Prophet (saww). Maytham on one occasion saw Amr bin Hurayth and asked him, Are you ready for the day when I will be your neighbor? Amr asked, What do you mean by saying you will be my neighbor? Maytham said, There is one day that I am going to be your neighbor. But Amr said, There are no houses for sale. There is no chance of that because there are no houses around here which are to go. But, later on it is found to be that Maytham does become his neighbor because Imam Ali (a.s) had told him of that. When Imam Ali (a.s) informed Maytham about his death that he is going to be hanged on a particular tree, Maytham said, I will never denounce your praise. And then every morning and every night he used to go to the tree and water it. He then used to tell the tree, I have been created for you and you have been created for me. Umm Salma told Maytham, In the night I would hear Rasulullah praising you in front of Ali bin Abu Talib. And that is why Maytham said, It will be my honor to protect Ali Bin Abu Talibs message! Maytham was a great and unique personality in Islamic history. Let us look at his life style, understand him and try to follow his values.
Whoever sorts out a problem of a believer, God sorts out his difficulties of this world and the here-after. (Bihar al- Anwar, Vol. 78, P. 122)Imam Husein (A.S)
13

Imam Sajjad (A.S) was about 23 years old when the sad event of Karbala took place. Allah (SWT) mentions in the Quran that this world cannot survive for a moment without the presence of an infallible Imam (A.S). Imam Sajjad (A.S) was the next Imam after Imam Husain (A.S) and was very ill during the battle of Karbala and thus he could not participate as a warrior. He asked for permission to fight but Imam Husain (A.S) told him that he was assigned with a different type of Jihad, which was to start after his fathers martyrdom. These were namely: leading the women and children of the Holy Prophet (SAWW) into the bazaars and courts of Kufa and Damascus. He was made a prisoner of war together with the entire family of the Holy Prophet (SAWW). It was at this time where he had to implement his role of Imamate and undergo very difficult circumstances. As prisoners they were insulted, humiliated and taunted. However, he still spread the message of Allah (SWT). After the martyrdom of Imam Husain (A.S), the survival of Islam automatically fell on the Imam (A.S) who was at a very tender age. He had a very difficult task of letting the world know of the mission of his father as well as to expose the evil acts and intentions of Yazid and the Bani Umayyah. He had to keep the mission of Islam alive and save it from destruction by the Bani Umayyah. The army of Yazid treated him awfully. He was heavily chained and was made to travel in the hot sun from Karbala to Kufa and all the way to Shaam. The whole household was brutally tortured and their veils were snatched. The Imam Sajjad gave iron melting lectures and presented true Islam before the listeners and it indeed had a very strong impact evil acts

of Yazid. Then, Yazid ordered for the Adhaan to be proclaimed in order to silence the Imam (A.S). But, he underestimated the Imams bravery and intelligence. The Imam stopped the muadhin and quoted beautiful words proving that he is the grandson of the Holy Prophet (SAWW).

HIS LIFE IN MADINA

Yazid had to free the Imam and his household out of fear of his ruler ship. Once in Medina Imam gathered people and told them the horrifying story about the battle of Karbala. He told them how his household was martyred and how he and the women were treated from Karbala to Shaam. Imam Sajjad (A.S) mourned continuously for the rest of his life. He held morning sessions where he narrated the tragedy and awakened the people. His supplicated towards Allah (SWT) with full devotion. His devotion was so strong and was felt by his companions that they gave him the title ZAINUL ABIDEEN. He wrote many duas which we use till today and are compiled in SAHIFA e SAJJADIYYA. It consists of duas totaling to about 54 in number. The above are the ways in which Imam Sajjad managed to spread Islam and allowed azadari to reach us today. The Treatise of Rights is theanother work attributed to Imam Ali Zaynul Abedeen (AS). It not only details the various rights upon a human being, but also has a number of other closely related issues such as justice, truth, obligation, duty and responsibility. Alhamdulillah!! THE TRUE MEANING BEHIND KULLU YAWMIN ASHURA KULLU ARDHIN KARBALA
Ashura became an extremely important date, both for its historical events and the symbols for which the battle between Imam Hussein (as) and Yazid stand for, i.e. the continual struggle between justice and injustice. Thus a Hadith from the 6th Holy Imam, Imam Jaffer as Sadiq (as) Every day is Ashura and Every Land is Kerbala. Prior to 61 AH there were numerous events associated with Ashura that occurred during the times of earlier prophets, but the events of Kerbala took precedence over all these other events. There are many tafaseer on this hadith by our great ulammas and there are many different viewpoints by means of which we can look at it. One of the most significant thing is to ask ourselves what precisely this hadith means. In order to comprehend the famous hadith it is important to know the real motive or grounds that led the Holy Imam Hussein (as) to make a move from Medina, which ultimately led him to reach Kerbala and eventually the Battle of Kerbala took place. Before leaving Medina, the Holy Imam (as) wrote a testimony for his brother Mohammed Bin Hanafiyah which reads as: ...... I have not risen to spread evil or to show off, nor for spreading immorality or oppression, I have left for the reformation of the ummah of my Grandfather and I desire to propagate the Religion and forbid against evil, thus following the foot-steps of my Grandfather and Father Ali bin Abi Talib (as). Thus the one who accepts truth through me, will have received truth from Allah, while the one who betrays me, I shall forebear until Allah judges between myself and the oppressive creed and verily Allah is the Best Judge, this is the testimony to you from me O brother. And my favour is with Allah alone on whom alone I rely, and my return is towards Him. Nafasul Mahmoom, Haj Sheikh Abbas Qummi, pg 85.

Act like the one who believes in punishment for sin and reward for good deeds. (Bihar al- Anwar, Vol. 78, P. 127) Imam Husein (A.S)
16

We now have an understanding as per to why exactly the Holy Imam (as) essentially left medina and we know the famous history that takes place before and after it and the Jihad the Holy Imam (as) makes. Here now it is important to understand that in Islam Jihad have two different sections, Jihad AlAkbar and Jihad Al-Asghar. To summarise Jihad al-Asghar is that of the sword and the battle field and jihad al-Akbar is that of the nafs which we also known as the inner jihad. Moreover at this instant we need to pose a question in our minds did the Imam (as) and his companions not do jihad of the nafs before they reached the plains of Kerbala? Did Imam Hussein (as) not exhibit a wonderful example during the last night of his life when he summoned all his companions and told them that if anyone of them has a debt on his neck then He should leave and go and pay of his debt first? The Imam (as) paid attention to the importance of Jihad al Akbar. Let us remember that the Imam (as) sacrificed all He had on the path of Almighty for the betterment of the religion of ummah of his grandfather who is the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Today as we live in this time and era how can the message of Ashura apply to us and how can we implement it to our day to day life as we say that every day is Ashura. Bear in mind the fact that even today we have an Imam (atfs) He may not be amongst us living with us but as we await His re-appearance He is waiting for us to be ready to receive him and lay the grounds of his re-appearance. We live in a world which is ruled by the Yazids of the time, not only in the outside world but even in within our homes. Is it not time for us to make the jihad Imam Hussein (as) made if we havent started it by now? Is it not our responsibility? We always come and commemorate the tragedy of Karbala and then what? Do we not say Every day is Ashura and Every Land is Karbala? Certainly the Holy Imam (as) made a huge sacrifice with regards to the Jihad of the sword, and for us as well it is very important to take this into consideration not necessarily by grabbing a sword and going to the streets to fight the enemies
Should poverty, illness, and death not exist, man would not bow to anything. (Nozhatol Nadher wa Tanbeehel Al Khatir, P. 80)Imam Husein (A.S)
17

but more over by war against injustice which can be done in many different forms, be it by the approach of our Akhlaq and invitation towards our religion, or by the way of writing different articles, etc... But at this point it is also important to remember the second part of the hadith which says every land is Karbala. It is not always possible for us to be in a Holy Land and that is why the second part of the hadith tries to indicate to us that it is equally important for us to make the Land we are in Holy. Although the physical aspect to everything in life is important we must also remember the spiritual aspect is also important. One of the most important one being the rejection of all external despots and enemies and that if we need to be killed to keep our honour and dignity (just as Imam Husain did), then so be it. After all, Sayyidu ash-Shuhada (as) has told us that: A death in dignity is better than a life in humiliation.

One who reveals your faults to you like a mirror is your true friend, and one who flatters you and covers up your faults is your enemy. (Bihar al- Anwar, Vol. 78, P. 128) Imam Husein(A.S)

THE MIRACLES OF ZIYARATE ASHURA

Once upon a time, there was a small village where the population was not very dense. There were two friends who were very best friends, Sameer and Ali. They made a promise to each other that whoever dies first will come in the others dream. After some years one of the Sameer died. It took Sameer two years to come in Alis dream. So when Sameer came to Alis dream, he asked, what took him so long? He said that he had to pay for his sins for the last two years. He said that he was forgiven because a very blessed lady got buried next to him so the Sameer told Ali to find out who that lady was. The next morning Ali was frightened because he remembered his friend saying that it took him two years to fulfill the debt of his deeds and it would still have gone on but because of that lady he was forgiven he asked himself What about ME??? This is a question we should ask ourselves too. What about US??? So Ali went to find out who that lady was who was buried yesterday. Finally he got some answers and according to his sources that that lady was a butchers wife. He went to ask the butcher: Salaam Alaykum chanted Ali The butcher replied, Wa Alaykum Salaaam! I have come to give my condolences to you about your wife who died yesterday said Ali. The butcher replied, Thank You please remember her in your duas. Ali told him everything about the dream I hope you dont mind me asking but what was so special about your wife that she ended up being so blessed that she even blessed the ones buried near her?

Never trust anybody but those who fear God. (Balagatol Hussain (A.S), P. 292) Imam Husein (A.S)
19

The butcher replied, She was very simple but every day she used to emphasize on Ziyarate Ashura and also she used to recite it every night before sleeping but the interesting part is that she used understand the meaning and also weep for that dayyes well thats what she used to do Well thats the end of the story We need to draw very important morals from this story as we all know after reading that the ones near the noble lady were also forgiven. Know think What about her own deeds do you think that she went through even with the slightest problem? I dont think so. Now after this story the main points that we need to ponder are points such as the question that we need to ask ourselves what about our deeds??? Think about this we always whine and try and justify for our mistakes why dont we just accept our mistakes and make the world a better place there will be more politeness, teamwork and all other good etiquettes that we can receive from this temporary life, not forgetting to try and not make the mistake again. FINAL NOTE: Try and read at least one paragraph of this ziyarat and try and ponder why are we ready to give our parents for imam Hussein (a.s) or are we saying Bi Abi Anta Wa Ummi for nothing?? BY: Nargis Arif Meghji This page is dedicated to my dear Uncle, Mr.Rizwan Meghji please recite a sura -e- Fateha for him and all mumineen.

Imam (as) was asked: What causes noble & eminent personality? He replied : controlling your tongue and doing good deeds. (Balagatol Hussain (A.S) , P. 332)

LESSONS FROM BATTLE OF KARBALA

Forgiveness: Nowadays, we all have the tendency of acting violently or not forgiving someone for a little mistake they may have done. But, we have to look at Imam Hussein (A.S). Even though, it was because of Hazrat Hur that Imam (A.S) was in Karbala and was going to be martyred Hazrat Hur came to ask forgiveness from Imam (A.S). Without a word Imam (A.S) forgave him. We have to learn to forgive others and to follow the footsteps of our Imam (A.S) and the Prophets and how they treated people. There is a character in this story for every age group. How beautiful a story is Ashura that our mothers, fathers, young ones, teenagers, and adults can all learn from it! The Imams dear daughter BibI Sakina (A.S) bore her tragedy with nothing but patience. As she was thirsty for days, she watched her uncle, brothers, cousins, and father murdered in front of her eyes, she was still patient. How impatient are we? How upset do we become with our parents if they ask us to repeat what we said or if they forget how to do something in which we have already shown them how to do once before? How impatient are we when we are in a line waiting for food at our centres? How many times do we complain? How often do we complain of heat, rain, or cold? Our sicknesses? These things do not only occur on one day, they occur every day, all year long, and the lesson of patience is taught to us by this precious little girl, merely four or five years old. What lesson do we learn from our beloved Hazrat Abbas (A.S) Who is so devoted and dedicated to his brother and master that
Whoever sorts out the difficulty of a believer God will sort out his difficulties in this world and in the hereafter. (Bihar al- Anwar, Vol. 78, P. 122)Imam Husein (A.S)
21

he was in complete awe of him? Who was the one who gave his limbs to fetch water for his niece? Who, regardless of being just as thirsty as the rest of the family, did not even take a sip of water when he reached the river? What lifelong lesson does this teach us? Yes, he did die thirsty, but he died with dignity and honour. He died knowing that he lived up to his duties and tried the best he could. How easily do we give up? It is difficult for us to pray five times a day on time some of us just quit. While others keep trying we complain about it. How many times did we read Facebook statuses or text messages in the month of Ramadan about how hungry we were, or how we cant wait until Iftar time? How many times do we complain about issues in our community centres, instead of actually doing something about it? How many times do we help to honour our religion instead of degrading it and questioning it for the sake of questioning? WE learn from him the value of sacrifice.

Never will be salvaged the people who win the consent of the creature at the cost of the dissatisfaction of the creator. (Maktal Khawarazmi , Vol. 1 , P. 239) Imam Husein (A.S)

OCEANOLOGY IN THE HOLY QURAN

BARRIER BETWEEN SWEET AND SALT WATERS
Consider the following Quranic verses: He has let free the two bodies of flowing water, Meeting together: Between them is a Barrier which they do not transgress. [Al-Quran 55:19-20] In the Arabic text the word barzakh means a barrier or a partition. This barrier is not a physical partition. The Arabic word maraja literally means they both meet and mix with each other. Early commentators of the Quran were unable to explain the two opposite meanings for the two bodies of water, i.e. they meet and mix, and at the same time, there is a barrier between them. Modern Science has discovered that in the places where two different seas meet, there is a barrier between them. This barrier divides the two seas so that each sea has its own temperature, salinity and density. Oceanologists are now in a better position to explain this verse. There is a slanted unseen water barrier between the two seas through which water from one sea passes to the other. But when the water from one sea enters the other sea, it loses its distinctive characteristic and becomes homogenized with the other water. In a way this barrier serves as a transitional homogenizing area for the two waters. To be continued......
