1. Siri and Caitlin come prepared with 4 expectations: i) treat building materials with respect, ii) respect and listen to others' ideas, iii) actively participate in team activities, and iv) do not hesitate to ask questions. 2. Students will be asked to explain what each rule will look like in the class room. Siri/Caitlin will add the students' points to the contract. 3. Each student is given their own folder (will have today's worksheet in it already), and asked to write their name on the folder and the worksheet. 3. Siri explains that the best scientific notebook will be given a prize at the end of the semester, and will explain what an ideal scientific notebook looks like: anyone should be able to pick up a scientific notebook and easily replicate all experiments and understand all the observations and conclusions without the need to consult with the writer (or even perform the experiment); notebook should be neat and complete (all questions answered, name and date on every page, no pages missing), diagrams should be labeled, informative and easy to follow; answers should provide the reader with a clear picture of what the writer learned. All entries should be made in pen (like a real-world scientist or college-level science student) and all corrections should be neatly crossed out so a reader can easily 10 read what was crossed out.

1. Siri explains the purpose of the electromagnet experiment (to create magnetic fields using currents, to control the power of the magnet using the batteries-inseries method learned in the light bulb experiment). 2. Students must complete the 'Purpose' portion of the electromagnet experiment before collecting their materials. 3. Students build an electromagnet using one battery and count the number of paper clips that can be picked up with it. Students connect an additional battery in series and notice that more paper clips can be picked up. 4. Students bring compasses near the electromagnet and notice that the compass points toward/away from each end of the electromagnet. Students then reverse the battery polarity and notice the effect on the compass is reversed. (40 Minutes)

1. Siri will introduce a model of the speaker and give the kids some tips on what they should and should not do. 2. Students will work in the teams assigned by their Do Now to create a speaker (50 minutes)

Students will work with their partner to complete their speaker, test it out and then clean up. (40 minutes)

We will take 5 minutes to calm the students down and bring their energy level down. We're thinking of doing a deep breathing, 0 relaxation activity.

Students will build their rail cars and test them out. (45 minutes)

Give 3 step directions to clean up the classroom and have them all seated in their 0 seats prepared for teachbacks.

All the rail car teams will face off against each other to determine which team will win the race. (35 minutes)

0 Students will clean up their rail car materials

Students will practice giving teachbacks about what they did today

25

Students build rail car and fill out scientific notebook worksheet as they go along. Students will investigate the importance of relative polarities of the magnetic wheels, current direction and current magnitude. Students will draw parallels from previous lessons regarding how to increase current delivered to a circuit, and how increased current corresponds to increased power output.

Students will compete in a rail car race tournament (elimination). Winning team will receive a prize and will present how they 25 won during the teach back.

Siri asks the class for what they think defines a motor, and for some examples of applications that use motors. Siri displays a DC motor he constructed.

Each student pair will build its own electric motor and experiment with ways to improve its performance (increase current, increase magnetic field strength, increase number of 10 turns of wire).

1. Siri asks the class how they think the electricity the students use at home/school is generated. 2. Siri displays the generator he built.

Each student pair will build its own generator and experiment with ways to improve its performance (increase number of turns of wire, increase number of 10 magnets).

Each group builds its assigned machine.

25

1. Students are given presentation evaluation sheets with things to look for. 2. Siri and Caitlin model a presenter and audience member, intentionally making some mistakes. Students take notes on evaluation sheets and give feedback. Siri and Caitlin add points not covered by students.

Activity 3: Students, in their respective groups, compile points they want to cover on their presentations. Activity 4: Each team gives a spiel to the rest of the class. The rest of the class is given a few minutes to ask 20 questions and then give feedback.

Students set up machines and prep presentations in their respective groups.

Students will prepare themselves for the WOW and do any last minute rehearsals

The class is split up into two sections. One section goes with Siri, the other with Caitlin. Each group presents to its section, with audience members asking questions. After this, Siri and Caitlin switch sections and we 20 repeat. (55 mins) Students will host a Symposium on the machines they have built this semester for their parents, Citizen Schools staff, teachers 20 and scientists (55 minutes)
