BCS & NCO A CADEMY

By Cadet Maria Mangano This is my second year as the Project Officer for Basic Cadet School & NCO Academy. With the assistance of C/CMSgt Jared Hendler, the organization, coordination, planning, and preparation of the Academies took place over the summer. I think I can speak for both of us when I say that acting as Executive Staff for the event we organized is absolutely amazing. Although my time at Great Lakes was extremely stressful it was also very worthwhile. Stepping back during graduation and realizing what we accomplished over a single weekend was mind blowing! The weekend flew by and before I knew it it was time to pack up and leave. I have next year's BCS & NCO Academy to look forward to now!

By 1st Lt James Kalemis This years Camp Lead was held at Freeport, IL. Thirteen cadets and six officers participated in the bivouac that included group leadership exercises, emergency services exercises, gazing through telescopes, model rocketry, a drill off and volleyball. Three members completed their Ground Team qualification. Cadet Krystal Freund won the Drill Off TWICE! I encourage cadets and officers to mark their calendar next year for this event. It was a lot of fun and a great learning experience.

By Cadet Ethan Peterman to get your beret. If you do you will fail. I went because of the ES qualifications. I am now qualified for Flight Line Marshaller, Mission Radio Operator, and Urban Direction Finding. Why, you may ask, do they give out so many qualifications, the answer is simple: they dont. Lots of work goes into training Blue Berets. From marshalling classes to radio classes to L-PER classes to lectures from the comms officer to... you get the point. And, of course, your training ends with the presentation of the coveted beret. Then when you go operational the work gets harder. Generally five minutes are allowed for breakfast, 10 for lunch and about 20 for dinner. That is, unless youre on KP during a meal. Two hours on the flight line is normal, two hours at Warbirds, two hours on ES. Flights are allowed one night in Oshkosh during the week, the first hour of which is often spent at Wal-Mart. Yes, cadets who have their first free time in two weeks want to spend some of it at Wally World. Time is also allowed for cadets to watch the air shows that happen everyday. So if at any time in the next few months I start involuntarily marshalling, or if I hear thunder and think its just an air raid, please take a deep breath, forgive me, and blame it on National Blue Beret.

National Blue Beret is an NCSA that takes place over two weeks at Whitman airfield in Oshkosh Wisconsin. A word of warning to cadets interested in attending: DO NOT go just

By 1st Lt James Kalemis Words can not convey our gratitude and appreciation to Capt. Bill Watson for surprising us with a visit to our squadron and bringing the Cessna 182. Last month the Orientation Flights were cancelled due to funding. So it was quite a treat for the cadets to learn about the aircraft and get to see it. I hear that we have funding for OFlights in October, so cadets, mark October 29 down as an O-Flights day.
