Service Support Tool: Uninstalling: Earlier versions of the Service Support Tool should be removed from the PC prior to installing an updated version. The Service Support Tool can be uninstalled from the PC via the Add\Remove Programs Option in Win95/98 as follows: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Double click on the My Computer icon. Double click on the Control Panel icon. Double click on Add\Remove Programs. Scroll down to Service Support Tool. Highlight it and click Remove. NOTE: The C:\ServTool\NewRom folder remains.

Service Support Tool: Introduction & Description: The Service Support Tool provides a graphical interface between the FDIMM data and the copier. It provides two main functions: Flash upgrade FDIMM firmware in Canon copiers Backup\Restore RAM data Flash Upgrade Function: The new and future line of both Canon Digital B&W and Color Laser Copiers will contain Flash Dual In-Line Memory Modules (FDIMMs). Each of these modules (number, function, and location depends on the particular copier model) contains firmware providing machine specific functions and instructions. As such, each module can be updated in the field using the Service Support Tool as bug fixes and or new features are added to the copier. Upgrading the modules is known as Flashing.

Backup\Restore Ram Data: Each copier is adjusted at the factory, and its adjustment values are recorded on the service label. If replacing any PCBs with FDIMMs attached or initializing RAM, the corresponding values will be affected. Using the Service Support Tool a backup file can be created and saved on the PC. Once the PCB has been replaced, the RAM backup file can then be restored to the copier, and its factory setting restored. Various other user settings stored on these PCBs may also be backed up and restored when required. Note: It is unnecessary to backup\restore RAM data when upgrading Firmware.

Service Support Tool: FAQ: System Requirements: 1. A PC or laptop with a Parallel Port configured as ECP: In Windows 95 verify via Control Panel->Device Manager->Ports->LPT1 And\or verify in the BIOS of the PC or laptop 2. A Centronics IEEE 1284 Parallel Cable: A cable showing "IEEE Std. 1284 Compliant" Non 1284 compliant cables will not work !! 3. No PC resource conflicts: Verify in Device Manager that no resource device conflicts exist. Installation of the Download Service Tool: 1. Installation of the Flash Download Service Tool will create the NewRom Folder on your PC. Verify this folder exists on your hard drive after installation: C:\ServTool\NewRom ROM Data Files: 1. Each copier FDIMM has its own self-extracting ROM data file on COL. 2. For example: There are separate ROM data files for the IR330\400: IP 1Mb, IP 4Mb, and DCON 4Mb

ROM Data File Registration: 1. Use the Flash Download Service Tool to Register 1 ROM data file at a time: Download a ROM data file from COL Extract the contents of that file to the default directory: C:\ServTool\NewRom Start the Flash Download Service Tool Go to Controlling Data (left hand-side off screen) Click on Add New ROM data Click on the Register Button Verify that the new ROM data is now displayed in the Window on the screen. Extract the contents of the next ROM data file to the default directory: C:\ServTool\NewRom and repeat the steps above to register

Flash Upgrading a Copier PCB: 1. "Country Code Mis-match" may appear when attempting to Flash a Copier PCB. This condition occurs when attempting to Flash Upgrade a FDIMM PCB from one country (say Japan) with another one from another country say USA. Select "Forced Write" for Flash Update to Occur. 2. "Copier & Laptop Require a Reboot" After Flash updating a Copier PCB: You must reboot both the Copier and the laptop prior to attempting to Flash Upgrade another copier PCB. Failure to Reboot will result in the above "Error Msg" reported from the PC. 3. "Device ID Mis-Match"- This error message may be reported by the laptop when a Flash fails: Check the parallel cable specifications: Should be IEEE 1284 Verify that the Parallel Port is configured as an ECP Port.
