1.3 Listening: Working to Give Wildlife Room to Roam

Whats the right answer when faced with seemingly irresolvable conflicts between wildlife and livestock? Kill the wildlife? Force the cows off the land? Or is there a better solution For rancher Rick Jarrett, it was a question that put his entire livelihood at stake. For 28 years he ran cattle on 8,000 acres of rich grass, brush and forest just outside of Yellowstone National Park. Although it was challenging to run cattle in such a remote location, his business did well. But the wildlife issues made it difficult. First it was grizzly bears killing a few calves, but the problems seemed manageable. Next, a dozen wolves moved in. It was never the same after that. The

wolves would corner the cows and harass them.

The

wildlife conflict was seriously impacting his business, and he had a choice to make. Legally, he could have had federal agents come in and kill the bears and wolves to protect his cows. But he wasnt happy with that solution. He had heard that National Wildlife Federation paid other ranchers to relocate their livestock to new locations. So he decided to give our Adopt-a-Wildlife-Acre program a try. Rick was eventually compensated $50,000 for giving up his grazing privileges and relocating his cattle to a conflict-free location. Grizzlies and wolves and potentially bison now benefit from safe use of the land. wildlife, NWF really listened to my needs. I respect them as an organization. They dont says Rick. want to just file lawsuits. They want to find real solutions and accomplish something for the benefit of Heres how NWFs Adopt-a-Wildlife-Acre program works: 1.- NWF pays ranchers for their grazing privileges on acreage where wildlife conflict exists. 2.- Then, we work with the U.S. Forest Service to permanently close the acreage to grazing. Ranchers are compensated, livestock thrives and wildlife survives .Its win-win-win!
