CHEM 2015 [C 20D] TUTORIALS # 1 3

TO BE DISCUSSED IN TUTORIALS ON THE WEEKS BEGINNING MONDAY 5TH MARCH, 19TH MARCH AND 2ND APRIL, 2012.
1. a) For ultraviolet light of wavelength 275 nm, calculate: i) ii) iii) iv) b) the frequency of this light the wavenumber associated with this light the amount of energy absorbed by one molecule when it interacts with this light the corresponding amount of energy absorbed by one mole of substance

When 16.7 mg of an organic compound of molecular formula, C9H10O, is dissolved in 100 mL of ethanol, an absorption peak is observed in the UV/VIS spectrum at 284 nm with an absorbance of 0.372 using a cell with a path length of 10 mm. [H=1; C=12; O=16] (i) (ii) Calculate the energy (in kJmol-1) required to bring about the observed absorption at 284 nm. Calculate the molar extinction coefficient for this absorption.
