Exercise N 6 Read and answer:

Huskies:
In the frozen waster of northen Canada, husky dogs are used to pull ledges. At one time sledges pulled by dogs were the only way of travelling in winter and even today they are often the only viable form of transport and can operate in extreme weather conditions when mechanical transport would be quite useless. Without them, the artict areas of Canada could never have been explored. Huskies can work in temperatures as low as 40C and pull a sledge weighing 500 kilograms at a speed of ll kph. They can cover at least 55 kilometers a day. Sledges are usually pulled by a team of twelve huskies, each one separately harnessed to the sledge so that the team has a fan-shaped formation, with the lead dog which is nearly always female, slightly ahead of the others. Huskies are highly intelligent dogs, capable of choosing the best route over ice and finding their way back home even when the sledge-driver believes he is lost. They are also faithful to their owner, whose life often depends on the strength and skill of his husky team Huskies are about 65 centimetres high and 112 centimetres long from nose to tail, They weight between 30 and 50 kilograms and have extremely thick coats which enable them to sleep outside in even the coldest weather. They are very strong dogs and eat huge amounts of seal meal. It is food which inspires them to work and they receive more food from their owner than what they would obtain if they had to hunt for their own food. Traditionally, huskies were turned loose to fend for themselves in the summer when their services were no longer needed but as the weather became colder they would return to their owner, knowing that they would be well-fed in return for pulling sledges. Nowadays, however, most owners keep and feed their dogs throughout the summer and ensure that they receive veterinary treatment. In this way, the quality of the team is improved. 1-Why are sledges pulled by dogs the only way viable form of transport in Norther Canada in Winter? 2-How did huskie dogs help in the exploration of Arctic areas? 3-How did husky dogs help the sledge driver when he thinks he is lost? 4-What is the importance of food in the huskies work? 5-How do owners contribute to improve the quality of the huskie teams?
