AEEE 341 Homework 1 Due on Wed April 21st Q1 An AM transmitter has a carrier power of 1 kW at a carrier frequency of 10 MHz.

It operates into an antenna with an impedance of 50 ohm, resistive. It is modulated with a modulation index m=0.5, by a sine wave with a frequency of 1 kHz. (a) Find the signal Bandwidth. (b)The total signal Power. (c)Sketch the signal in the time domain. (d) Sketch the signal in the frequency domain.

Q2 A signal m(t) is bandlimited to M.It is frequency translated by multiplying it by the signal cosct. Find c so that the bandwidth of the transmitted signal is 1 percent of the carrier frequency c.

Q3 (a) A full Amplitude Modulated (AM) signal is represented in the frequency domain as in Figure Q3. Amplitude(volts) 100

40 0.996 1.00 1.004 Frequency (MHz)

Figure Q3 (i) Derive the equations of the carrier, the modulating and the modulated signals. (ii) Calculate the modulation index and the bandwidth of the amplitude modulated signal. An AM transmitter is modulated by two sine waves, at 4kHz and 8 kHz, with a modulation due to each of 40% and 50% respectively. (i) What is the effective modulation index ? (ii) What is the percentage of the power wasted in the carrier? (c) (d) Describe briefly what is meant by the term modulation and why it is needed. Why is it important not to modulate to a depth of over 100 % and why is it important not to under modulate?
