STEPS FOR ALL SWIMMERS

Cowans Gap 2011 Lake Closure
What happened?
In early August 2011, the Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) learned of two cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) in children who had recently visited the state park lake. HUS is due to shiga-toxin producing E. coli bacteria. Additional HUS or E. coli illnesses quickly were discovered, leading to closure of the lake which appeared to end the outbreak. Tests after the lake was closed were negative for shiga-toxin producing E. coli and no sewage leak was identified. Although the outbreak was associated with recreational water swimming, the source of contamination of the lake never was identified. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has since collaborated with the DOH regarding the need to educate the public about safe recreational water practices, especially for small children who are at higher risk for infectious diseases from recreational water.

STEPS FOR PARENTS OF YOUNG CHILDREN

Take your kids on bathroom breaks or check diapers often. Waiting to hear I have to go may mean its too late. Change diapers in a bathroom or a diaper-changing area and dispose of the soiled diaper in an appropriate receptacle. Germs can be spread in and around the beach/lake. Wash your child thoroughly, especially the diapered area, with soap and water before they go swimming. Invisible amounts of fecal matter can end up in the water.

When you are sick or have diarrhea, dont go swimming. You can spread germs in the water and make other people sick. Avoid getting water in your mouth. Dont swallow lake water. It is a good idea to wash your hands and body after swimming in a lake. Practice good hygiene. Shower with soap before swimming and wash your hands after using the toilet or changing diapers. Germs on your body end up in the water.
