Understandings: Dr. Seuss is a famous American author. Dr. Seuss has a unique writing style.

Essential Questions: How can reading for pleasure encourage us to read more? Overarching Questions: How can reading for pleasure encourage us to read more? What are some ways that we can share our favorite books with others? Topical Questions: Who is Dr. Seuss? What are some of the common characteristics of Dr. Seuss books?

Stage 3: Plan Learning Experiences


Week 1 1. Before reading Oh, the Places Youll Go!, ask students to make predictions about the book based on the title and the cover. H 2. Students will listen to a read aloud of Oh, the Places Youll Go!. W 3. After reading, have students write about where they want to go when they grow up. Students will share their writing with the class. E, E2 4. Students will brainstorm other Dr. Seuss books that they have read, and titles will be added to a class chart. 5. Students will use the Oh, the Places Youll Go! Display board to find the Dr. Seuss titles in the BUES library. 6. Students will dress up as their favorite Dr. Seuss character. They will write a letter to Dr. Seuss explaining why that is their favorite character. They will share their letter with the class. 7. An Accelerated Reader competition for Dr. Seuss books will be held to promote and monitor the reading of Dr. Seuss books among students. This will also monitor reading comprehension. 8. Students will participate in Dr. Seuss polls, interactive chats, and answer questions on the Oh, the Places Youll Go! BUES website. 9. Different Dr. Seuss books will be wrapped creating mystery books. Students will choose one of the mystery books. Students will be given different supplies and can create a presentation project based on their mystery book. Students can complete this activity any way that they want. They will be given a generic rubric to guide their project. 10. In groups, students will plan a birthday party to celebrate the life of Dr. Seuss. Students will use the Oh, the Places Youll Go! BUES website to research the life of Dr. Seuss. Using the research information, students will decide on key elements that should be present at his party. The groups will present their ideas to the class, and the class will decide as a whole which elements will be included. 11. Students will create a persuasive speech on why students

should read their mystery book. They will read their speech on the BUES morning announcements. Students at BUES will vote for the student with the winning mystery book speech. The winner will have their mystery book read at Dr. Seuss birthday party. 12. Students will create a birthday party for Dr. Seuss. Students in the other third grade classes will be given invitations to attend. During the party, students will present their mystery book projects, which will include a brief summary of the book. 13. The winner of the Accelerated Reader Dr. Seuss competition will be recognized at the birthday party. 14. Before leaving the party, students will answer the essential question.
